Just inherited an older 4GB 2G iPhone from a friend who upgraded to 3G. There is no sim card in the old phone any longer and so I'm trying to find a way to use the phone as an itouch instead. Any help or suggestions are GREATLY appreciated since I can't get the thing to do much more than make an emergency call.
Also, I've already tried hooking it up to itunes and it doesn't even register, so...yeah.
So, here's the thing, I know nothing about creating custom firmware etc etc, so can anyone point me in the right direction of a tutorial or something? lol. Sorry, I know its kinda lame but I'm only so so with computers
I tried QuickPwn...it works kinda...except after its finished making the custom firmware it tells me to hold down the power buttons and etc to make the phone go into DFU mode it keeps failing...what am I doing wrong?

Well if you use pwnage it's gonna tell you the same instructions to put the phone into DFU mode. You aren't following the directions for DFU mode properly.
1. Power off phone
2. Hold power + home for 10 seconds
3. Continue to hold home and let go of power
4. Wait 15 seconds until iTunes sees the phone.
Well, I finally got it into DFU mode, but now iTunes only says that it cannot do anything with the iPhone because there is no SIM inserted in it. Thus I cannot update it with the firmware that was constructed for me...how can I bypass this hiccup?
actually it pops up with a message once iTunes seen the phone it is:
An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod and try again. An unknown error occured (2001).
So frustrating

Plug your phone in. iTunes will open and give you an error about the sim card or activation or some such BS. Move the iTunes window out of the way and ignore it.
Run QuickPwn. QuickPwn will give you a couple opportunities to enter DFU mode. If you fail, try again, and try again. It took me about 5 tries before I finally got it.
Quickpwn wants you to set it into DFU mode so it can write the custom firmware to the phone. Once you enter DFU successfully with Quickpwn, your phone will be jailbroken. If you fail to enter DFU mode while Quickpwn is running, your phone will not be jailbroken.
Also you need to know that the advise I'm giving you is for Quickpwn not Pwnage Tool.
Alright, with Quickpwn I got the phone into DFU mode no problem, I did as you instructed and moved the itunes window out of the way, and continued on with Quickpwn. After the little countdown window that assists you in getting the phone into DFU went away the menu went blank and at the bottom it reads "Quickpwn is about to run on your phone" and it just stays there loading...am I supposed to just let it run until something happens or is it jailbroken at this point?
If it is jailbroken can I unplug it now? And if so what is my next course of action?
I'm leaving my phone hooked up and Quickpwn running until someone replies or something happens.
Here's a link that will help you along. DFU on OS X
Follow the instructions from the link above.(it's a lot easier than it first appears)
THEN
Run quickpwn. Yes, it is different on a Mac. There is an issue with OS X 10.5.6 that needs to be addressed.
Yeah, after doing a bunch of research I finally found that was the problem, thank you all so much for your advice and YES I finally got it working without a SIM.
Now, my only other two questions are:
1: Is it ok to hook it up to iTunes again and put music on it?
2: Where/How do I get things like wallpaper and emulators and put them on my newly modded iphone?
2 - I would start by installing 'Winterboard'
Winterboard is a nice neat little theme interface. Personally I'm a big fan of the KillSign themes.(search KillSign in Cydia)
