Iphone 3G and Activation
I bought an Iphone on Ebay. I know it is a 3G but I don't know which firmware it has. Here is my issue. I am not an AT&T customer hence I can't activate my iphone in Itunes. But I want to use my t-mobile sim card with the iphone. What do I have to do to make it happen?

On December 31st yellowsnow will be released. Which is a software to unlock the iphone 3g. For now there's nothing. Just wait till the 31st (4 more days). Your iPhone 3Gs must have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier. Searched -> The easy way to find it is for you to click on preferences. Then general tab then the about tab. Under there there is a field for "Modem Firmware" that is the baseband.
Also here's a link to the yellowsnow article:

and the demo article:

I don't really own a Iphone 3g, nor an Iphone. I will be getting one soon though.

You can also use a sim-adaptor if its 2.1 or under....however, as stated...the soft unlock will be released in a few days anyways.
If its running 2.2 then your screwed either way, there is nothing at this point.

But before I even can jailbreak I need to activate the Iphone in Itunes. I am NOT a AT&T customer. How can I do this that I can use the phone at least as an "Iphone Touch"

Hmmm... good point. If I was you I would download firmware 2.1 and then restore to that. If it gives you an error then you'l know you're at firmware 2.2 and you're stuck. If everything goes well then just use quickpwn to jailbreak it and away you go

I can access the filesystem (not thru Itunes) from the Iphone. Is there a way to find out the firmware by looking at a specific file on the Iphone?

If I use QuickPwn 2.0 and the the firmware 2.0 I get the green check mark. The same happens with QuickPwn 2.2 and firmware 2.2. But if I use it with firmware 2.1 I get an error message. Does it mean I am screwed?

Download Quickpwn 2.1 and use firmware 2.1. They have to MATCH.
Apple Forums | ModMyi.com | iPhone, iPod, Mac, OS X, Mods, More - Downloads - QuickPwn 2.1 Windows GUI
But you have to follow step one first... which is RESTORE YOUR IPHONE USING FIRMWARE 2.1! You can't jailbreak using quickpwn until you have done a fresh restore to the firmware first.

but if he restores to 2.1 and quickpwns the phone still wont be activated. THAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH QUICKPWN?!?!
if you have a mac or can get on a mac, use the pwnage tool and create a custom 2.2 firmware that includes the jailbreak + activation then restore to that.
if on windows, download a copy of 2.2 custom firmware that includes the jailbreak + activation. then use the last winpwn which works for 2.0.2 (i think). create a custom 2.0.2 firmware then at the end it will put you into a special dfu mode. once it is in this mode it will say "now restore in itunes". you want to open itunes and restore to your DOWNLOADED custom 2.2 firmware, not the 2.0.2 youve just created. your phone will then be activated. you can then go to settings>about and check the baseband.
Restoring to a CUSTOM 2.2 does not upgrade the baseband.
THEN, wait until the 31st. the dev team are releasing a software unlock for the 3g iphone. you will be able to download this in cydia and unlock your phone to use your t-mobile sim.
You will not be able to use 3g with t-mobile though. The 3g frequencies t-mobile offer are not supported by the iPhone, so you will be stuck on 2g/EDGE.
I havent used quickpwn for a while because last time i did it didn't offer activation. Does it offer activation now?Last edited by reeko; 12-27-2008 at 11:34 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

it doesnt matter what itunes version. at the end of creating a custom firmware winpwn will put you into a special dfu mode, that's all you want winpwn for. each phone needs to be put into this dfu mode using winpwn / pwnage tool (for mac) ONCE so that it can accept custom firmwares.
you need itunes 8 for firmware 2.2 which is what you are restoring to, so i suggest the latest itunes. The Original Autobot of MMiJesus couldn't turn into a fire engine
