Do i need a att sim to do the first step (restoring) of unlocking?

I am using that guide but when it says "Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left" mine does not come up because it comes up with a box that says enter a sim, so my iphone does not even come up on the list for me to select so i can restore.

what state is your phone in when you start? you need to put the phone in DFU mode before anything else. it cant recognize a sim if it doesnt have firmware on it. you need to start in dfu mode, before you even connect it to the computer at all. make sure it shows the connect to itunes before it even touches the cord to connect
