    Default 2.2 Upgrade locks legally unlocked iPhones?

    There are already many threads at apple site and other iphone sites, but so far nothing really concrete regarding this issue and no official apple statement - maybe anybody knows more..

    So far it seems that many people updating their legally unlocked phone to 2.2 get a locked phone - if you have an italian phone for example, and update it in Germany -> locked phone. So it seems to a bug, well apple has done many of them with the phones or just a crazy thinking of apple to stop importing phones from one country to another - even if bought for a high price an unlocked version you will be locked to the country.

    Right now I am on 2.1 and have not tried an update yet..

    Has someone already experienced this kind of problem? Are there any concrete infos so far, is it just an other apple bug, like so many or really a crazy thinking to stop import iphones?

    And another question - how exactly is this system working, does it checks the SIM or does it depend on the account origin?

    Total B****cks mate. I have a iphone which is fully unlocked by apple (bought in an italian phone store) I connected the iphone and updated via itunes to version 2.2. The phone is still unlocked working with any sim I wish (currently using Vodafone UK) with no problems at all. I have not read any reports of it locking up any phone other than those who use a sim adaptor.

    Regards John

    Well, there are a lot of reports and not only in official apple forums;
    But here just 2 links to the official forums, another source is ispazio - they just dropped e message to wait before upgrading just due to this issue...

    Apple - Support - Discussions - Will upgrade to 2.2 lock my legally ...

    Apple - Support - Discussions - Bricked Iphone 3G after 2.1 --> 2.2 ...

    As I mentioned there are surely a lot of people who upgraded without any problems, like you did.

    But thats the problem - you do not really know if you will be a lucky one or not when you update...

    As I say IT DOES NOT lock a legally unlocked phone. Why on earth would they. Your saying that those people who own a legally unlocked phone in their country are running the risk of getting a locked iphone after they upgrade. Apple would not be that stupid, think about it????? Anyway what ever you decide to do is up to you.... All the best....

    John (without problems running 2.2)

    No reason to become angry;

    I have a legal iphone bought in Italy and just before updating I read an info on ispazio - large italian comunity for Iphone - then I checked the forum and I found a lot of people who updated their iphone to have problems. If you followed the links - you noticed.

    Why would apple do this - well that is the point - for me it makes no sense and I do not believe it is legal - thus I have bought an originally unlocked Iphone and so it should remain unlocked. Many posts would say Apple is doing this to block importing iphones - this would make sense for apple - just for them - because each nation has different plans, and many nations are locked and there is a lot of commerce with imported iphones...Take for example Germany - Here Apple has exclusive rights wit D1 from German telecom - but with imported iphones a lot of people are using vodafone - that's a point - German Telecom paid a lot of money for the exclusive rights; so think about it;Why would apple do this;;;; But I do not think it is legal - even if they do it..

    But as I said before updating and then having problems I just wanted to check if anyone had more infos for this issue. Thats all - no reason to be harsh;

    You say it does not lock a legal iphone - but there are a lot of post in which is stated that it may lock legal phones - when updating in other countries - thats the point. thats all. I am glad that you personally have not experienced this, and maybe if I would upgrade to 2.2 I will be lucky as you are and have no problems.

    Or maybe not - therefore I just reported the posts and maybe there is someone who had this problems or someone who already knows when and why this happens to some users.. Because the problem exists - prove apple forum for example or ispazio - and maybe it happens just in some specific cases - and knowing when and how - someone could avoid it...

    PS: For Italian users - largest italian iphone community - post with hint to wait before upgrading - in italian
