3G iPhone Factory Unlocked??? WTF?
This person is claiming that they are selling FACTORY UNLOCKED 3G iPhones. His feedback is great so it doesn't look like a fake seller etc. Is there really factory unlocked iPhones circulating?

Phones from Australia and Japan (i think) and perhaps other countries where laws prevent locked phones are sold factory unlocked.

I have seen them advertised on ebay. The one guy, whom I was looking at, lives in Italy and he told me they sell them there unlocked due to laws in that country. I'm going to hold off because the 1500 price tag is not worth it, especially if I purchase it now and two weeks later, an unlock comes out.
I would hold off on purchasing factory unlocked iphone. The unlock could come out at anytime, although this is the longest I've seen waiting for an unlock.

I wonder if it is possible to copy the unlocked iphone's firmware and import into locked phones. I wonder if that will actually unlock the phones.

No. Its not the firmware.....its the baseband. You can swap firmware and the baseband remains unaffected.
