What do local wireless stores use to unlock 3g iphones?
Hello, everyone. I found from this site and others that there is no software to unlock the 3g iphone yet. But a friend of mine just got his 3g iphone unlocked by a local wireless store using software for $35. Does anyone know what kind of software these guys use? I want to research to see if there is any side effects of this unlock. Thanks a lot for any information.

I you really sure they unlocked it via software and not a sim-adapter?? Cause im real sure if any software existed we would know.

well actually from 90% of shops that I have asked here in the UAE are claiming that it is a 3G software unlock and there wont be any problem when you upgrade it to newer firmware thru itunes. Now I dunno if they have hardwired the sim adapter into the phone but I would guess that it wouldnt work when a software upgrade would be done. And there is no sign of any sim adapter attached to the sim tray. I have also heard some shopkeepers saying that they import the 800-900$ iphones from singapore which are factory unlocked to work with any carrier in the world, now is this true? if it is then how does the apple store unlock these iphones or is it done at the manufacturing stage?
btw, iphones in the UAE are going for $885.00 for a 16gb claimed to be "software unlocked by factory" but something sounds fishy since everyone says there aint no software unlock!
kudos to the dev team!! i hope they're out with a 3g unlock software solution soon.

Unless the phones were bought from specific countries overseas....they are using a sim-adaptor.
