Need UNLOCKING advice

Hi everyone,
I got a new 3G iPhone so now I would like to Unlock my old iPhone.

I've read several threads, blogs & misc articles on this task but all get clouded with mixed results from users with different firmware & such.

Is there a foolproof guide for doing this?

Here's the Old iPhone info that was displayed in general settings:
Model: MA712
Version: 1.0.2 (1C28)
Modem Firmware: 03.14.08_G

I am using PC running WinXP

Let me know if any other info is needed...

Many thanks in advance...

Okayyy... so much for the handout...

Well truth be told I have tried every app available except for ziliphone, its been downloaded on my pc for quite some time but didn't want this iphone to start on fire, so i never used it.

It seems that something must be wrong with this phone since every app has had the same result.

I run the software, it sees the phone, it extracts software, reboots the phone, then the phone shows the yellow triangle of death (connect to itunes) and infinitely loops on & off.

What gives???

This phone wouldn't even do an update from apple without doing this same thing except apple called it "error 1102" or something like that.

The only thing it would do is a total "apple itunes restore" but only after rebooting the phone with ibrickr v0.91

So apparently the problem is that its not going into DFU or Recovery mode when necessary.

I've tried using iliberty+ to get into DFU but it just did the same thing... turn off, turn on, yellow triangle of death (connect to itunes).
It wouldn't do anything once I reached this step so I would have to reboot with ibrickr again.

Even when i manually put the phone into DFU or recovery mode the software either stops responding or doesn't recognize the device because it has become "disconnected".

Has anyone else had this happen & what was your solution?
I'm starting to believe that it may have something to do with itunes since "AppleMobileDevice" eternally runs in taskmanager.

Can I get some feedback? enlighten me on what I may be doing wrong or possibly overlooking...

Thanks...

take out sim card
use itune 8 restore to 2.1 firmware.
then close out itune after is done, before itune recognize it
then use quickpwn 2.1(2.1 only)
follow instruction after it is done.
then sync with itune

I already have iTunes 8.0.1.11 installed.

Can you explain why I need to remove applemobiledvice service?

Does it still need to be removed from iTunes 8?
I ask cuz when I connect my iPhone iTunes says the phone cannot be used because applemobiledvice service is not running.

"then close out itune after is done, before itune recognize it"
How will I know it's done, before itunes recognizes it?

"then use quickpwn 2.1(2.1 only)"
Okayyy... does it matter that I have one of the first (oldest) iPhones?
The Quickpwn readme says its for Jailbreaking and Pwning iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch. Also unlocking 2G iPhone, but dosen't say anything bout the first iPhones.

I thought my phone is 1G if that matters.
Can anyone tell me if they had any problem or does the update bypass this problem?

I am just trying to avoid bricking this phone.

Thanks again...

itunes/iphone need applemobiledevice. if you've uninstalled that, best thing to do is just uninstall itunes as well and reinstall the latest version of itunes

when your phone's firmware has been upgraded to 2.1, it will automatically reboot, and itunes will show a message saying that your iphone has been updated and will now reboot. you can go ahead and quit itunes and wait for your phone to reboot. it's really not a big deal even if itunes recognizes your phone prior to you shutting it down

the first/original iphones are referred to as iphone 2g, so yes, that is your phone

Okay, sweet... thanks for your speedy reply!

I'm all set with itunes8, but I'm still having problems trying to restore.

itunes starts extracting software, it then says it's preparing my phone for restore, my phone shows the triangle with connect to itunes (recovery mode)& won't do anything else.
itunes then says it could not do the restore "error 1602".

I've also tried manually putting the phone in recovery mode and then starting itunes but then the screen just kinda has a (black) glowing background and does nothing else. Then itunes gives me "error 1604"...

I'm gunna try switching usb ports, I've got connectivity issues or something. This shouldn't be giving me this much trouble...

If you wanna get rid of the error's when restoring in itunes to a "custom" FW file, do this:

1. Take QUICKPWN...start the process with it....it will have you place the phone into DFU mode....after that the process actually starts....then the iphone screen will turn COMPLETELY WHITE...AS SOON as this happens, KILL/CLOSE QUICKPWN IMMEDIATELY.

2. If done properly, the iphones screen will stay completely white.

3. Now, go to itunes and shift-restore to your custom FW file.....will work no errors.

(Basically, your tricking Itunes)

Unfortunately QUICKPWN only supports devices with firmware 2.0, so I can't use that method.
I'm currently runnin tha OG firmware: 1.0.2 (1C28) Old school... lol

I've been following the "iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your 2.1 2G iPhone Using QuickPwn (Windows)" link but they don't have any troubleshooting suggestions for my problem.

I'm going to get a new usb 2.0 pci card.
Everything I've read, related to the problem I'm experiencing, points to bad or slow ports.

Even apple customer service asked if I was trying to update using extension cables, dock, or plugging into usb keyboard ports or hubs.

This has got to clear this problem up, it's always been hit or miss when updating & the like since I got my first iphone.

We'll see what happens...

Update

Okay, I installed a new usb 2.0 pci card & then restored to 2.1 with no problems.

I then started quickpwn and followed instructions to step 11, this is where I couldn't get past.

"Step Eleven"
"QuickPwn will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode."

My phone went into recovery mode but I was never prompted to attempt DFU mode.

"Once its in recovery mode you will be prompted to: Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode."

I've searched & read everything I could find to solve this problem but for some reason I'm not getting the prompt to start attempting DFU mode.

I can see the steps listed but they're grayed out.
All that's highlighted is "Wait for your iPhone to connect in Recovery Mode"
I think quickpwn is not "seeing" the device after it goes into recovery mode because it says "Preparing your device - please follow the instructions above"

I let it run for over 10 minutes like that with no change, it just hangs with no response...

Any ideas what to do next???

My itunes is up to date & I'm running WinXP Service pack 2.

Btw... I've tried manually putting it in DFU mode but that don't help either. Quickpwn just tells me to reset the device, "home & power button for 15 sec then Power button for 2 sec", then it's right back to not seeing the phone when it goes into recovery mode.
It's like something else (like windows trying to set a driver) accesses the phone when it restarts & it's this action that interrupts the quickpwn process.
Any ideas what to do???

***Update***
I've been up all night trying every which way to get past step eleven in the quickpwn guide.

I totally uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and all apple\quicktime software.

I removed quickpwn and re-downloaded all necessary files.

I added a usb 2.0 pci card and even tried switching ports and also data cables.

It's now clear that this is a WinXP component problem but I have irreplaceable data installed on this machine and can't afford to loose\corrupt trying to reinstall windows.
Can anyone tell me what processes or services should or shouldn't be running in windows that would cause quickpwn to "hang"?
I've looked in winxp admin tools\services to see if anything was enabled\disabled that might be causing this, but I don't know what processes it relies on to function properly.

I've watched (in device manager) while toggling the drivers from "Apple Recovery (iBoot) USB Driver" to "Apple Recovery (DFU) USB Driver" so I know the phone is communicating with the PC, but for some reason quickpwn don't know what's going on.

I would try another machine but this is the only one I have...

Plz help!!!
Thanks...

***** UPDATE *****

I managed to put together another PC outta spare parts I had lying around.

It was a super slow 697MHZ with 384MB of RAM, running a hacked (to look like vista) version of WinXP Service pack 3.

I re-downloaded all necessary files and ran Quickpwn with NO problems whatsoever!!!

If anyone is having the same issues as I was try reinstalling your .NET framework, I think that was my problem all along.

Thanks for everyone's help...
