NO ONE KNOWS! Not even the Dev team knows! Yes they've hacked the baseband.. great. That doesn't mean they have a STABLE 100% unlock. It may take months... THEN they have to create the Bootneuter tool to run it. The process will be completely different then hacking the 1est gen phones so they can't just cut and paste the code from Bootneuter 2.0 to whatever they're designing now. This release before Xmas (or any other THEORY) is just dumb. The iPhone 3G has been out for like 4 months now and they just now can run code on the baseband... it's going to take time.

i don't know about months:
We’ve made some decent progress with the iPhone 3G, nothing worthy of a party as yet but we are moving along nicely, we’ll keep you updated on this.
and just a heads up:
Update warning!
Now for something a bit more serious, we’ve explained about Apple’s updates in the past and we’ve warned against the immediate installation of these updates without knowing what they do to your device.
This is indeed true of the iPhone 3G’s upcoming 2.2 release. Installing ‘2.2’ on the iPhone 3G could affect your chances of any software unlock in the near future (should one be found and released), so when you see an update in iTunes await our instructions first!

I would rather have a version of Winpwn for 2.1 than an unlock for the 3G.

well all we know right now is that dev team has successfully run unsigned code on the baseband on the 3g...no actual news on the software unlock quite yet
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Here are some more great news!!!
First here is the video!
Persistent Nucleus Tasks on Vimeo
This ability we now have to spawn background tasks means we are one step closer to the 3G soft unlock. We have a clear path to follow, and “all” that remains is the implementation.
A quick summary of the key 3G-unlock-related achievements we’ve made so far:
1. Unsigned code execution on 3G baseband
2. Reverting 01.45 baseband to previous versions
3. Patching of static text (the AT&V demo)
4. Injection of AT routines (the task list demo)
5. Injection of background tasks (this demo)
Now it’s on to overriding the baseband code that enforces the carrier lock.
A high-quality version of the video is available via bittorrent here.
P.S. That “One more thing!” text is being generated by the backgrounded “steve” task at 5-second intervals. The “A0” is the task’s priority.
P.P.S. Remember…don’t update to official 2.2 when it comes out if you ultimately want a 3G soft unlock!

Very awesome Dev Team

(lol I still don't have a working turbosim for my carrier, I wonder if the softunlock is done before I order it which takes 10 days to get here.)

they are very close, why u thnk the 2.2 firmware have a baseband update. may be apple counter messure lol. but really i can't wait for unlock i am ready to take gevey sim out. been a lot of problem well internet. i been checking iphone dev team site every 8 hours, lol. hopefully something come up. but i do like 2g flexiblity to customerization. my 2g all pimp out, lol. gold plate pezel with gold plate back, my back apple logo light up white, when phone on, when call come thu, it blink blue. can't really do that on 3g. well i need a broken one, so i can play with it. i may able to figure out so new trick.

Thank the Lord
Well thank god (or somebody that should be called GOD)
3g Unlock will be with us on the 31.12.08 (is this correct)
A couple of things ?? if you dont mind
1. when the unlock comes out will it be for Windows as well as the MAC as i run windows ?
2. the last time i unlocked and jailbroke it cam in a CFW package and just upgraded that way and HEY PRESTO every thing was unlocked and Jailbroken. So will that be the case this time and if so where is the best place to get CFW from ???? (from this site last time)
Thanks for your help guys.
I must say this could be the best new year in the history of MAN if this unlock happens
