Having problems unlock 2G iPhone 2.1 software

I have an iphone with software version 2.1,(not sure which generation its not 3G) using MacBook Pro with Mac OS X and iTunes 8, and my iphone is not activated but is backed up to iTunes (I use two other iPhones which I’m not trying to unlock). I initially was using iLiberty+app. For 2G iPhones. On step 7 in the unlocking process when my iphone is “Entering recover mode?... the program stays in this mode for a very long time. I finally must force quit and restore.

I have asked around and I was told to use pwnagetool for mac.

I tried to download pwnagetool 2.1 for Mac OS X but when I download this software I receive a message saying, “An external application must be launched to handle file”. When I click launch application nothing happens. I’m using firefox because I get a message from safari saying, “Safar can’t open file”. I’m a newbie to iphone unlocking and I’m totally confused. Does this PwnageTool 2.1 work with another program? Why can’t I open it?

I apologize for the long post but as I stated I’m a newbie and wanted to provide as much info as possible
