Default a unlocking theory thats somewhat logical

    facts
so tmobile will unlock THEIR phone if you have had for 3 months. [its a law]
and so will at&t except with the iPhone becuase of they think they are gods.
    whatever
so why can i not call tmobile and when they ask for my IMEI number just give them my iPhone one?
would this work or can you tell the type of the phone with the imei number?
i have done this with a blackberry pearl [moms], Tmobile MDA [dad] and i have i used i-smartphone and its working with my iPhone but i also have a blackberry which they think i have been usuing since way back when.

i dont want to waste my unlock code if its not going to work.
    would this work?

    ps
i was in swizterland [this summer] and i asked them to unlock it and the provider says i had to buy from them =[

No it wont work. The IMEI tells them everything about the phone.

If it was that simple it would have been done a loooong time ago.

    True.
What would they say if I gave it to them?
Would they be like WTF this isn't a blackberry?

Don't waste your time T-Mobile will only have access to their own phone unlocks like thier own Blackberry phones and HTC producs etc. Not other company branded handsets. I am still unsure how Apple can get around the Digital Millenium Copyrights Act that covers cellphone unlocking from November 2006-2009??? How do they do that??

Going down the same train of thought, in December I am moving back to Italy, i have had the 3g version of the Iphone since the end of August. I will likely suspend my contract with At&T beacuse i do not know when ill be back, what do i do with my phone? Will AT&T unlock my phone, will vodafone or tim in italy unlock it so i can use it on their network? Or would i just have another expensive ipod, which is what my 2g iphone is doing right now.

does anyone have an answer to this, should i just call at&t?

AT&T does not have the ability to unlock iPhones either overthe air or with software. If they did you know there would be people out there doing favors and it would get leaked. Apple wants complete control over their product. The iPhones shipped pre-unlocked are still a mystery as to if they are hardware unlocked somehow or what. You will most likely have to buy a new phone in Europe.

That can't be right... I bet if enough of us make a stink out of this, Apple will be forced to follow the law. But that's just my thought process. I don't quite understand how any other provider gives the unlock code, just as long as you are not in contract for said unlock code, with no issues. But the iPhone, it is a phone after all...

does anyone know where the exact law can be found?
if so and they are intact violating it then they we can get a MMi effort to the FCC [or whatever] to get this done.

There is no such law in the US... it;s simply company policy

I would imagine there is more to it than we realize as both Apple and AT&T have surely spent quite a bit to ensure that there butts are covered.
