gevey sim: works in one, not the other

Hey guys;

I am completely at a loss here...no idea what this could be so please, I'm all ears...I would love a helping hand:

I'm using the gevey sim to unlock an iphone 3g 16gb. The gevey works in one phone no problem. This phone is not yet activated but when I put in the gevey with any sim card, after a minute or two, I have perfect signal with the carrier.
On the second phone, the gevey sim does not work with any sim or in any situation. I had firmware 2.01 on at first and it didn't work: "no sim". Then I tried updating to 2.1 with itunes and still no luck. Then I tried jailbreaking with pwnage tool (the jailbreak worked flawlessly) but I still had the "no sim" message. I then tried restoring the iphone to factory defauly thus putting it in the same state as the other phone and that also did not work. I've tried with 3g on and 3g off and every other combination of settings and I still got nothing....and the gevey still works fine in the other phone.
I would think it was a hardware problem with the phone but with the original rogers sim card, the phone works fine.

So...any help here would be much appreciated...

Yes, the phone works fine with the original Rogers sim but doesn't work with the gevey and a different sim. If I insert just a different sim on its own, I don't get the "no sim" message, I just get what looks like no signal. Is that normal? I tried changing the doors and that also didn't work.
