Thinking About Unlocking..Need Some Help?????

Well as the title states i been thinking about unlocking my 2nd generation iphone. I was thinking of calling att and canceling my plan and buy a cheap *** phone from them and get the media plan and min. etc at a way cheaper price and just switch the sim card into the iphone. should i do this and will this work if i do. what did some of you do to unlock? is it worht unlocking or more of a head ace???
