Unlocking phone for use in Mexico?

how do I unlock my first gen phone to use it on the telcel network? I have unblocked it here in the US and it showed T-Mobile and AT&T but with the telcel SIM inside. I am on 2.1 not jailbreaked right now waiting on winpwn but I know how to do it but im just wondering how it would connect to the telcel network and how to do that. Will I have to be im mexico in order for the phone to show it?
