activation help

so i bough this on craigslsit for 250 it has modem frimware 04.03.13
i dont know if that is how it came, or if he upgraded it
anyways i would like to know if there is anyway to jailbreak and activate it....maybe even unlock it?
at the very lease activate it so i dont need to renew my contract but unlocking it since i goto canada about 2 weeks every other month would help thanks!

What are the first 5 digits of the serial number? That would tell me a lot and maybe I can help
