- download the iphone 2g firmware 2.0.1 (via www.BenM.at Downloads)
- then ALT+click (osx) or shift+click on "update" (NOT RESTORE) and select the manually downloaded iphone 2g firmware 2.0.1.
let itunes update your iphone.

the phone will remain unlocked

I have just updated my 2g iPhone following bensen's instructions and it works like a charm
The iphone ins't any faster though... :/

not too crazy about installing full firmware from someone ive never heard of on my phone. i'll wait for the dev team

I downloaded the update through iTunes then copied it to my desktop and updated without a hitch. No Cydia, but that's okay for now. The address book works much faster which was driving me nuts.

By the way, make sure you click on Update while holding the Alt button or you'll screw the the update.

Is there any unlock for a iPhone 3G v 2.0.1 though? I know it jailbreaks but what about unlock?

Apple released the 2.0.2 moments ago, and I tried upgrading it directly through iTunes, and I am still able to make calls...
