okay, I'm a newb here... here's the history of my problem.
My kind papa has handed me down his 1G iPhone, as he has moved on to bigger and better things (3G). Before the hand-me-down, he upgraded to firmware 2.0. He's never unlocked or jailbreaked this phone, it's a fully legit one ...until now. With his O2 UK SIM card removed the iPhone still worked nicely as an iTouch.
I decided a good thing to do before unlocking the phone so I can use it with my Orange SIM was to reset the phone and delete my Dad's stuff. Now I have a brick
How do I progress from my current situation?
Phone Screen shows - USB cable to iTunes / Slide to Emergency
iTunes (7.7) shows - "THE SIM CARD INSERTED IN THIS IPHONE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED. Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please etc etc..."
I've spent the last couple of hours looking through these forums and elsewhere and I'm not sure how to progress to the bigger and better things like unlocking and jailbreaking without being able to activate the phone via iTunes.
So far I can't get the *#307# sneak to work, possibly because this is FW 2.0 or possibly cause I'm DOINIT WRONG
I've thought of using iActivator but the walk through requires me to know the phone's IP address and I can't get into the phone to work that out.

This seems like cool and useful community. I hope someone can help or at least show me what I should be reading. I appreciate as a newb I'm probably missing something basic.
Just un update,
I started to follow the instructions for downgrading the firmware from this thread:
http://www.modmyi.com/forums/unlocki...1-4-i-did.html
With iTunes 7.5 and ipsw 1.1.4, I keep getting 1603 and 1604 errors and now the phone no longer gives Emergency Calls as an option when you turn it on - just USB cable + iTunes picture.
sigh, this is complicated. Am I doing things in totally the wrong order? Do I need to PWN the phone first?
