iPhone 2g with any ATT sim?

Hey guys let me get this right. I've read that if I have an iPhone 2g with firmware 2.0 that I can put in any ATT sim card and it will work regardless of the plan?

Has anyone done this? I don't want to go through iTunes and it signs me up for another 2 year contract or put me on any new plan.

I currently have a 16gig iphone 3g running 2.0, and gave my old iphone to my sister which was running 2.0.

I downgraded iPhone 2g back down to firmware 1.1.4 and unlocked it so she can use it, but I would rather upgrade the firmware for her so she can use the app store.
