This will probably be patched by Apple VERY soon. This works because at the moment, the activation server gets confused with 2G and 3G iPhones and as a result... Activates 2G ones for us without a contract

To take advantage of this: Simply update to 2.0 and try and go through the reg process. It will not ask for anything to do with tariffs. It will ask you to accept so T&C's and for your Apple ID. Your phone will also say activating twice and then stop.

When updating, make sure you have a SIM card from your official carrier in it.

Tell me what you think! Tested on about 4 iPhones. My iPhone now restores to any firmware and does not ask for ANY activation It does it by itself officially.

I can confirm this works for o2 contract and o2 pay and go (not iPhone), so make sure you get a copy of the firmware now before it is patched!

Maybe this was done on "purpose". Apple has made a ton of money off the 1st gen hardware, knowing full well that a lot of the money came from devices that weren't activated through AT&T. Just a thought, but maybe Mr. Jobs decided to look the other way?

We no longer need to worry about activating future updates either. As far as Apple and our phones are concerned. We all have legit contracts .

This might not be patched as soon as I thought because Apple cannot track it very easily...

I have a 2G iphone that i am using on Orange at the moment that i have used winpwn on to activate, jailbreak and unlock. If i use my original 02 sim that came with the phone can i now upgrade from 1.1.4 to 2.0 and then activate without entering a contract? Then can i downgrade back to 1.1.4 and use winpwn to unlock and jailbreak?

Which FW are you referring too mate? 1 from itunes i take it

No I used the leaked version from this forum which is:-

But re-reading what james is saying it is not the firmware but a combination of the new firmware trying to activate throught iTunes and iTunes trying to connect to it's swamped activation server which is basically not running right. So I don't think the firware is doing it is the iTunes activation server and they can fix that any time they like.

Cool, thanks for the reply, i have got that 1 already, did you put phone into dfu mode to put it on?, cause tried alt/shift restore & update but get error 1403 in both cases.
