Will There be anyway to not activate the Iphone 3G in Store?

My friend is getting me an iphone 3G in store on the 11th but he is not sure if he can get it because of the in store activation, will there be any way to avoid it ?? Thanks !

Your friend (really you) are going to have to pay. I found this

That means that you dont have connect it in store, but also means that it won't be available on July 11th.

The AT&T rep in the store will be able to upgrade your father's account then replace the IMEI on your account to show you have the iPhone 3G on your number w/ the data plan. The rep will then replace the iPhone 3G IMEI that was placed on your father's number to what he had originally. Simply switching SIM cards will not work. The IMEI will have to match the SIM.

Apple I believe will not have the ability to do this but I may be wrong.

once a jailbreak is figured out though couldnt you change the IMEI with ziphone or something similar?

Actually the O2 online store can only be accessed from within the UK and before completing the order you have to sign an 18 month contract online.

Pay as you go or prepaid versions, which will allow the phone to be unlocked and not require a contract, will be available around Christmas time.

I did hear that carriers in Australia will be selling prepaid iPhones that can be unlocked on July 11.
