My friend is getting me an iphone 3G in store on the 11th but he is not sure if he can get it because of the in store activation, will there be any way to avoid it ?? Thanks !

Your friend (really you) are going to have to pay. I found this

"A no-commitment version of the iPhone will be available for $599 and $699; however, this version may not be available on July 11th launch."

That means that you dont have connect it in store, but also means that it won't be available on July 11th.

once a jailbreak is figured out though couldnt you change the IMEI with ziphone or something similar?

You can buy it online in the United Kingdom whereby you can simply activate it thru iTunes (or not, if you don't want to.)

Actually the O2 online store can only be accessed from within the UK and before completing the order you have to sign an 18 month contract online.

Pay as you go or prepaid versions, which will allow the phone to be unlocked and not require a contract, will be available around Christmas time.

I did hear that carriers in Australia will be selling prepaid iPhones that can be unlocked on July 11.
