iphone virgin.
Hi there!
So I'm in Canada, and this is probably as simple as the questions come, so hopefully I can get an honest answer.
As you probably know, iphone is coming to Canada July 11 exclusive to Rogers Wireless. What you may not know, is that the rates are ASTRONOMICAL...we're getting it up the ***. Also, a three year plan is mandatory. I would rather not pay these prices, nor sign up for a three year contract, NOR wait until another carrier picks up the iphone. It is for this reason I would like to unlock an american iphone to Bell. The catch is, I would like to sign up for pay-as-you-go service. My question is..is this possible? or do I have to sign up for a plan? and if it is possible, how do I go about it?
Also, if I do get it unlocked can I still use internet surfing via my carrier or do I have to be in a wifi/wireless area?
I'm quite nervous to unlock this phone. It seems like more can go wrong than right.
I really have no idea what I'm doing. baby steps please.
Thank you!!

Bell, and every other wireless carrier in Canada uses CMDA technology. The iPhone wouldn't work on their network.

Sure you can unlock it, but you'd have to use it with Rogers (or Fido which Rogers owns).

Rogers is your only option for using the iPhone in Canada. CLICK!! I know its an old article but it shows that Rogers is the only GSM game in town, so to speak.

Buy it, unlock it. Go to a Rogers store and pick up a SIM. Tell them you want to sign up for a Pay-as-you-go plan and have your own phone. (Don't tell them its an iPhone, the upsell would be brutal). Take the SIM home, plug it in, call Rogers to activate.

Follow Eurisko's steps, then read THIS thread for all the info you need to use iLiberty+ on your PC. DO NOT use ZiPhone!

^^^Unlocking it is really an easy task if you follow the instructions. As far as having someone unlock it for you, try cragislist. People advertise on it all the time (even though you can do it yourself for free).

A SIM is $35 at any Rogers store. For Pay-as-you-go, that's the only upfront cost. The rest is just paying for your time. Remember though with a PayGo account, you can't use Data.
