French and German off the shelf Unlocked iphones - What do we know?

There are iphones out there in france / germany that have been sold unlocked to Joey Public!! or Jean or even.. erm..eh.. Jürgen?

I know this mainly a US centric board - but there have to be people here who er.. know people??

Are there any good French iphone forums out there? I will take my babblefish and march forward!!

I was wondering why this hasn't been dug into more, probably has, but...
Could we posibly edit iTunes to change where the IMEI is sent to to a hacker, which will then tell iTunes to unlock the phone?
