Have att and iPhone but don't need data...

So I have att and just got a used iPhone from a friend...soooo I don't need the data plan (wi-fi everywhere I go).

Do I activate my new phone through iTunes?

Or

Should I unlock it through anySim?

Or

Maybe there is another/better choice?
