Unlocked phone, wanting to virginize and get on at&t

Ok so heres the deal, I've been using my unlocked phone with 1.0.2 now for a while on my carrier, but my carrier was just bought by at&t. I can virginize it and all but thats where im confused, i want to then be able to get 3rd party apps on it.

Do i need to activate it through itunes from at&t first and then jailbreak it or do i jailbreak it and then activate via itunes.

Im using an intel mac just to let everyone know.

Why not just get a regular line of service with ATT and pop that new SIM card in it?

I guess I just didnt want to still have an unlocked phone, just incase something does go wrong I dont have my unlocked phone I just have a jailbroken phone.
