How was my Iphone Unlocked

Hi,
My friend is dropping over his Iphone this evening which is currently running 1.0.2. as he wants me to add the installer app.
He purchased it last week in the states from an electronics store which were selling them unlocked for $500. My question is, how would I know which method was used to unlock the phone. I would like to take it up to 1.1.1 at least.(revirginise process etc) I obviously would like to know the method used to unlock so as to ensure I wouldn't brick it etc? Will the IMEI be intact if it was unlocked via IPSF etc as opposed to anysim??
So what I'm trying to ascertain is, How do I update it to 1.1.1 without knowing the software unlock previously used?Do i need to know it or is it irrelevant?
Many thanks
Damien

All this really tells you is if the guy who unlocked the phone, forgot to delete the program he used. I wouldn't count on it.
