Unlocking the iPhone straight OTB (if it's 1.1.1)

If I get an iPhone that is 1.1.1 for X-mas what steps do I take to unlock it so it can be used on T-mobile? Can I just follow the guides on the site straight out of the box? Or does it need to be activated first?

If it is a 1.1.2 then I think I will just use AT&T - Although I don't want to. By the way how is EDGE on T-mobile? Curious what other users have experienced.

I've used EDGE on ATT and TMO and it's about the same for me. Compared to wifi it's lame, but it's better than nothing.

How do I tell what version the boot loader and firmware is out of the box? Just so I can check it real quick.. as I said nothing has been activated of anything.

follow the link above, and then follow the first think there (activate/jailbreak)
start that guide - and when you get into settings panel, you can check:
general -> about, and it will tell you what firmware you are running.

if it is 1.1.1, you should be good to go,
I don't know how to check the bootloader without using SSh,
and I don't know how to use SSH without jailbreaking first.
if it's 1.1.1 out of the box though, it wouldn't have the new bootloader from what I've read.
