My sister has an 8gb iphone and which was activated, by any chance i can unlock it and install 3rd pty apps. Will it effect the activated sim card or the contract?

From everything I've read on these forums, you can indeed unlock it and install third party apps. without altering your sim card physically. Now you would be voiding your Apple warranty, and you might have to answer to your service provider...
What country are you in, and who's your service provider?

If it's on a valid contract there is no reason to UNLOCK... just jailbreak. You can use Ziphone 3.0 (ziphone.org) or iLiberty (www.theiphoneproject.org).
