Brand New Un-Activated O2 iPhone - What can I do?

Basically it's 1.1.2 and its newly bought from the UK, obviously I don't want to activate it I want to use my existing Orange Contract sim - can I do anything yet, even anything to bypass activation so I can use it with no sim? Can i safely downgrade or anything?

no worries, this forum is full of nice and helpful folk. there are a few trolls but typically, once ignored, they depart.

From what I can gather, basically, you can Downgrade the firmware to 1.02 or 1.1.1 ... so that your iPhone becomes useable as an iPod Touch. But because the "bootloader" or the like, is different from the UK version, looks like it'll be several days before we can unlock to make it Sim free (carrier/network unlock)

Confirmed with 02-UK IPhone

Downloaded 1.1.1 ipsw file from

http://iphone.unlock.no/ under the heading where can I find the iPhone firmware files


Made the phone goto restore mode by pressing the power on/off key and home key (This took a couple of attempts to get rid off the activation screen)

I then downgraded to 1.1.1 in Itunes (BY Pressing alt/option) while selecting restore

You will get an error 1015, as noted I opened up Independence 1.2.5 I also quit Itunes and made sure it was quit by opening up Activity Monitor

After a couple of minutes the Activation Screen appeared

I was then able to move onto the next step

I followed this guide to the tee and have ended up with a Jailbreaked IPhone which I can use as an Ipod Touch

BTW You will have NO phone functionality whatsoever even if you swap SIMs!

I hope this noobs guide will allow others to activate their phone

Yeah I found this out over at Hacint0sh forums, now we await those clever coders to come up with a solution to this new bootloader problem.
