Well, to start with, make sure you purchase an iPhone with the 1.0.2 firmware. That could be hard to find these days. I have heard that iPhones with the 4th and 5th digit of the S/N starting at 37 or lower should have the 1.0.2. firmware. I have no way to confirm this. Perhaps you can get one at an AT&T store but not at an Apple store or online. The S/N and the IMEI number are on the outside of the iPhone box.
Your best bet is to buy an unlocked iPhone on Ebay so you don't have to worry about breaking and unlocking it yourself. Just remember never to upgrade to 1.1.1 firmware until there is a "easy" solution out there.
