Today AT&T sent me an email and text about me tethering I'm on an unlimited data plan they said they detect that I'm tethering my iPhone 4 to my computer how is this possible. Has anyone else had this problem with AT&T and if so is there a solution thanks. Here's the email..
We've noticed your service plan may need updating.
Many AT&T customers use their smartphones as a broadband connection for other devices, like laptops, netbooks or other smartphones– a practice commonly known as tethering. Tethering can be an efficient way for our customers to enjoy the benefits of AT&T's mobile broadband network and use more than one device to stay in touch with important people and information. To take advantage of this feature, we require that in addition to a data plan, you also have a tethering plan.
Our records show that you use this capability, but are not subscribed to our tethering plan.
If you would like to continue tethering, please log into
your account online at

to sign up for DataPro 4GB for Smartphone Tethering.
Here are details on the plan:
DataPro 4GB for Smartphone Tethering
• $45 per month
(this gives you 4GB in total, combining both your smartphone data plan for $25 and the tethering feature, $20)
• $10 per each additional GB thereafter, added automatically as needed
• Mobile Hotspot capabilities are included for compatible Smartphones
If we don't hear from you, we'll plan to automatically enroll you into DataPro 4GB after March 27, 2011. The new plan – whether you sign up on your own or we automatically enroll you – will replace your current smartphone data plan, including if you are on an unlimited data plan.
If you discontinue tethering, no changes to your current plan will be required.
It's easy to track your usage throughout the month so there are no bill surprises. For example, we send you free text messages when you reach 65, 90, and 100 percent of your plan's threshold. If you would like to monitor your account more closely, go to
Wi-Fi Data & Tethering Data Plan - Wireless from AT&T
to learn about other ways to track your data usage.
As a reminder, our smartphone data plans also include unlimited usage of Wi-Fi at no additional charge. AT&T smartphone customers can use Wi-Fi at home or on-the-go at any one of our more than 23,000 U.S. hotspots already included in your data plan.
Thank you for bringing your account up to date. We appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve your mobile broadband needs.

They may be looking at the type of data you are pulling in too.

Haha I don't use NetFlix. Now my question is, is it possible to run up that much data with NetFlix on an iPhone? If so, does the phone load it quick enough for you to view or must you tether to have adequate loading time?
It loads it good enough. Lately Netflix had some issues but it seams as if they are correcting them. The quality has improved. Keep in mind that its a stream, rather than a direct download thus minimizing the amount of time you have to wait before you can actually watch. End result still with ton of data dumped.
Do you guys have the grandfather plan?

Thats what this thread is about lo
I'm using FireWall IP from cydia on both phone and pad and since you could tether on the iPhone

I don't know but it's funny the sent the email & text to my wife and I use my iPhone 4 mywi to tether to mbp still tethering right now and waiting for them to send the text or email to my phone so I'm hoping that fire wall ip is helping.

Hopefully they won't hit you as well :-)
Did some digging and it seams that it is in fact possible for them to detect tethering. However it isn't as most would think. They can detect if more than one IP is using the same network thus assuming that you're tethering. I'm not sure how far one could push the argument with them but I could see it ending with contract termination. Might be able to get away with early termination fee that way.
At this point I'm thinking switching with t-mobile as I had sone rough experience with Verizon in the past. IMO they are just as sneaky... Does anyone know if I could use my iPhone 4 with Tmobile 4g network? Obviously not at 4g speeds but perhaps at 3G/ ??Hit the thanks button if I helped in any way

just call them and sound like u have no idea wat tethering is and say u use slingbox or netflix and that is the reason for ur data usage. They will edit ur account notes so that it doesnt automatically change, just dont admit to them that u tethered without a tethering plan. They r just seeing the data usage rack up and want to monetize on it.

sometimes when you do an upgrade the primary phone changed.
In my case my Daughter's number was the the primary until I had it changed.
Easy to know, its the phone number that is charged the Family plan charge.

Exactly souljerr. Just call ATT, pretend you don't know what tethering is. Tell them you are a heavy Netflix or Pandora user. If they continue to confirm you are tethering, tell them to prove it.
They most likely won't be able to, and that should end the conversation, with them forking over an apology.

Has anyone received these notices with relatively low data usage? In the range of 1-10GB? I'm just wondering if I need to stop using MyWi entirely. I use around 5GB a month and rarely use MyWi but they just added the "infrastructure mode" which allows true 802.11N wireless access which is sorta nice (if it didn't require 4.3).

Would the grandfathered data plan work?No Sig Spam

Im sitting at 5.2 GB of usage so far and haven't gotten the email or text message yet. I tether two laptops to MyWi on a daily basis. Im thinking they are targeting the extreme data users.
