iPhone 3G use prepaid SIM with no data?

I'm thinking about giving a family member who doesn't have a cell phone my old iPhone 3G to use for a music player/games and the occasional phone call or text. Data will not be needed or used, and I'll probably do some digging on APNs and how to disable data anyway, although they probably would use it over WiFi.

I'd like to not have to add a line to my family plan which would cost me $10 a month, and would also require me to add a data plan.

This person is probably going to use like 10-20 minutes a month, so a pay-as-you go or prepaid plan would be ideal.

I understand I might be able to activate a gophone, take out the SIM, get a new AT&T SIM, call AT&T to swap the info, and use the AT&T SIM? Am I understanding this right (probably not )?

Yes but only till they flag you which maybe means you get a week of use. Its not worth it to fight att add aline there will be know contract and pay the 25 a month for 10 add aline and 15 dollar data then you can cancel when not in use.

I'm not going to pay $25 a month to add a line and a data plan, I'll just pick up a stupid tracfone or something and they can use that....

Funny that there is no other way to do this?

Personally i think its pointless its an I(phone) to be used as a phone and pda if your not going to use it as a phone or for email,text,web then get an itouch for music and pictures.

Other than that tracfone seems to be your best option.

I have a GoPhone AT&T plan all i have is one dollar a day and 200 messages and i dont get charge no monthly bill on my 3gs all you have to do is just put in a sim card and thats it! but mine is jailbroken! and I use WiFi for internet

Thanks, but for one dollar a day, I could add the 3G to my AT&T family plan ($10 a month for the extra line) and pay for the 200mb data package ($15 a month) and 200 texts ($5 a month).

Yea you can do the 25cents a min, without messages you can use other sim cards to but has to be jailbroken!
