Swapping from older AT&T phone to iPhone 3G
Hi all, i currently have a razr V3xx with an unlimited data plan through AT&T.
Friend just recently gave me an iPhone 3G. It was unlocked, and worked with my razr sim. But, stupid me hooked it to iTunes and updated to 4.2.1.
Anyway, I know there is a new unlock, but since I am already an AT&T customer, i figure I explore legit channels first.
How can I upgrade my current sim to one that is compatible in the iPhone? Is it as simple as going in to at&t?

you dont need an unlock for it to work with at&t just put sim card in and activate it through itunes

Doesn't work with current sim. Says its unsupported and wouldn't let me activate through iTunes.
Spoke to a friend that works at AT&T. Says I need to get a different sim, but he can do it for me no charge. Going in to see him tomorrow so i should be all set.
Just gonna go that route....but I did go ahead and install jail broken 4.2.1 with bb 5.15.04 (as opposed to the non-jb 4.2.1 that I had before)....but with no service with the older AT&T sim.....didn't want to do the unlock to 6.15.00 if I didn't need to.Last edited by Mustang5L5; 11-28-2010 at 09:19 PM.

No, it is a 3G sim in my razr....But it wouldnt let me activate, and with the jb 4.2.1(which allowed my to use the phone rather than be stuck on the emergency screen), it isn't being recognized by the phone. (I didn't unlock it yet....don't want to if I can avoid it)
But....when I first got the phone, it did work. Was unlocked on 3.x

Okay, well that did not work. Changed to the correct sim card today (looked identical to the old one) and still same result. No service
So wondering if there is something else I should do...or just do a blank slate factory restore and see if i can do the activation process again?
The first time through the activation process it said "This sim is not supported". Not that i've changed SIM's, i guess we can see if it does it again

Do a plain Jane restore it should work or something is wrong with the sim reader

I'll try that tonight. I don't care about JB or anything...i just want the phone to work.
Funny thing is it read fine when I was unlocked and on FW 3.x. But anyway now i have an updated AT&T SIM so lets see what happens now.
Well, i did a factory restore.
FW 4.2.1
BB 5.15.04
I connect to Itunes with the NEW AT&T sim card and i get a "This sim card does not appear to be supported" message.
GRR..
Now what? Thing is...it worked! I was using it previously on 3.x with an unlock with my SIM. After the software update it wont let me activate!Last edited by Mustang5L5; 11-29-2010 at 03:15 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Theres is something going on with your sim reader its a hardware thing...

But I do get the "no sim" message when I remove it, and it goes away when inserted.
Rather explore any software issues first before I solder in a new sim reader. They are cheap.....$5
One more thing to try first.
Did a restore through iTunes.....gonna download some fresh firmware and do a dfu restoreLast edited by Mustang5L5; 11-29-2010 at 03:51 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Is it possible that it could be a non-US iPhone you received??? That would explain the invalid SIM popup in iTunes and the lack of a signal on the phone when SIM is inserted while it isn't unlocked by Ultrasn0w...

Since you have it working 'as an iPod touch,' go into Settings--->General--->About and look at what's listed as Model. If the last two digits are not LL, then you don't have an at&t-locked iPhone and you will need to update your baseband to the 6.15 version to unlock it for use as a phone again.

Well, after looking at the model number, it's a UK phone
MB489B
Would rather resort to the 6.15 unlock as a last resort. Not ready to go that route yet
