I have an iPhone 3G, on iOS4, and tethering isn't working, even with it being enabled. On my computer it says network cable has been unplugged, this has only been a problems since I updated
The status bar doesn't change to blue, and no data is being sent to my computer. Since 3.1.3, I believed Apple has patched tethering so that it can't be enabled by just a mobile configuration profile. If anyone knows of and fix, please make a tutorial.

Are you on a legit DataPro plan with tethering (the $45 2GB plan)? If so, then you might call AT&T for more help on that part, as they may not have provisioned your plan correctly.
If you're not a legit DatPro plan: Jailbreak & remove all references to the at&t carrier bundle in the '/System/Library/Carrier Bundles' directory. That will make the phone default to the 'Unknown' carrier bundle and allow you to input APN and tethering settings yourself. Then the tethering button should work again. I've done this myself of my 3GS, and tethering works fine on my iPad plan.Member of the hackint0sh forums.

The other current alternative is to buy MyWi 4.0 from Rock or Cydia. That would make tethering work on the standard bundles, plus that gives you the additional ability to make your iPhone into a mobile hotspot.
Most unofficial carrier bundles/ipcc files aren't even updated for 4.0 yet and/or won't successfully sideload into the iPhone by iTunes (even thought iTunes says it's updated the carrier settings). So, it pretty much forces 'illegit' tethering users to remove the bundle or buy MyWi.Member of the hackint0sh forums.

I found a fix... It enables Internet tethering without buying the package... You need ultrasn0w... iOS 4 commcenter patch... A benm mobile configuration profile... And if you want the ability to add apn editing without screwing up signatures...

Here's the commcenter patch
Email yourself the Benm profile
help.BenM.at | BENM.AT ... Oh and have ultrasn0w installed... Then reboot and enabled tethering via SBSettings... This will only need to be done once... After you should have native tethering enabled... And change the type-mask of your apns on the carrier profile so that it allows tethering... Type-mask values are found here http://b3.s3.quickshareit.com/typemask_new23290c.png ... I would only do this if you know what you are doing... Sorry I didn't shorten anything... This was done on my iPhone...
