Iphone 4 Says carrier unavailable after restore

I just got the new Iphone and I did a restore from backup so I could get all my texts and contacts back, after I did that it now says no service and when I go into the about section of the iphone it says carrier unavailable any ideas on how to fix this or get the carrier info back on the phone?

Did you activate it yourself with iTunes? Was it activated before you restored from backup? Its best to set it up as a new phone and then just sync to get your stuff back.
