Question regarding AT&T and non-iPhone Data Plan
I just signed up for AT&T service for two 3G iPhones with the following services:
*700 Minute FamilyTalk
*Unlimited Text Messages
*Family Data Unlimited
I signed up with IMEI numbers from cheap phones off eBay so that I would qualify for a promotion (no activation fees, $100 credit for porting numbers) with the intention to upgrading to an iPhone data plan once my credit hit. After thinking some more, I decided I may risk it just keeping the current data plan.
From my research here and around the web, AT&T is not too happy about subscribers using the iPhone with a non-iPhone data plan. My questions is will AT&T hit me with some outrageous charges for using a non-iPhone data plan or will they just add the iPhone data plan or do nothing at all?
Has anyone had any experience with this? I haven't read of anyone actually getting the iPhone data plan added to their accounts, only threats from AT&T. I have heard of people who have had "friends" get hit with crazy charges, but no first hand accounts.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

AT&T will attach the data plan eventually if they see iphone imei's on your account and no data plan

But is that the extent of what they will do? I don't have to worry about any crazy data overages?

nope they will send you a text saying hey you're on an iphone and not using a data plan. finally they will just add it and once its added you cannot remove it unless you give them an imei of a different nonsmart phone and it will start over

Just ignore it, they won't change your data plan without your consent. I used my iPhone with a non iPhone plan for almost a year and AT&T never changed a thing on my account. Occasionally I would get the warning text like you did and that was all.
A friend also did the same thing for over a year and never had anything changed.

I ran into that problem with my iphone when i first got it.. same plan as the above copied post too..
I ended up having to get a new sim card for the phone. The data part of the phone refused to work. messaging worked fine, I got calls in and out, but the internet data just wasn't working..
Ended up having to get a new updated sim... Was using a sim that came with my old razor... Got hit with the data plan..
its all good..

Is this promo still available?
If so what type of "Cheap" phones qualify?

02-21-2010, 08:05 PM #15Go on WIFI with your Iphone and go to this page. Choose the AT&T config. That's it.. Just try it out. It will look different on your phone from what it looks like from a computer. FYI..I just upgraded to the family data plan for non-iphones, and am attempting to use it with my unlocked 2g. How do I configure the settings to work with the "family data" so that my internet will work?

Hit the thanks if it worked..

the mistake you made was giving them your imei numbers. You should have just given them imeis of crappy phones like a razor or something. Ive had 2 iphones on my family plan for 2yrs now with unlimited text and family data package and they still havent changed it. Even though it shows up in their system that you have a iphone, as long as you didnt give them your imeis, you can deny it and they cant do anything about it.

Yes, the min that you use the phone they can tell what phone you are using. It does not matter what phone IMEI you give them they can always just look at your account and tell. Even if their system says you have a razor on the website all they have to do is a sweep and find all the iPhones used in the area.

I've been reading through this thread and I have a couple questions.
Are the iPhones which are being used on non-iPhone data plans jailbroken? Or is just as simple as taking my SIM card out of my current phone (HTC Tilt) and putting it in my 3GS iPhone? Is there anything else that needs to be done?
Thanks!
