Are the iPhones which are being used on non-iPhone data plans jailbroken? Or is just as simple as taking my SIM card out of my current phone (HTC Tilt) and putting it in my 3GS iPhone? Is there anything else that needs to be done?

    Thanks!
No jailbreaking is needed. For the 3G and 3GS phones as of OS version 3.0, the phone will accept any AT&T sim, even GoPhone sims. The GoPhone sim will activate the phone just as a real iPhone sim will. To use data, you need to load a carrier file to the phone.

On a 2G iPhone, the phone needs to be unlocked to use a GoPhone sim.

Thanks. I have my AT&T sim card in my iPhone 3GS now. How do I download the carrier files mentioned?

Also will this work on 3.1.2?

By the way, AT&T does add the iPhone plan automatically. I bought my iPhone off Craigslist and use the Family Data for about 6 months. I received multiple warnings from AT&T. This month AT&T sent me a text saying that i do not have an iPhone and that the correct data plan was added. I checked my account and I did have the iPhone data for 30 dollars. I switched my SIM to my old Sony Ericsson and called to remove the data. They removed it no problem. I am laying low for now. But the truth is, AT&T does add the plan automatically.

5 months and still going strong...

I don't know if this has anything to do with them not adding the plan to our phones, but I am on a no commitment (no contract) plan.

A friend also did the same thing for over a year and never had anything changed.

If you get a text, that means they have already changed your plan/added the iPhone data feature on your plan. DO NOT IGNORE IT if you dont want to pay 30$ a month. I just called them just now to get rid of the data plan on my phone.

What we have to worry about now is the Carrier settings that gets updated onto the iphones. I think those are what authenticates to ATT that you have an iPhone.

So is there a way to remove those settings once an iPhone has been activated? Because I just bought two iPhones when it went on sale at WallMart, but I'm planing on not using the data on just one of them. The phones have already been activated by Wallmart although I asked them not to, but they said it has to be activated there. So I'm waiting for the 30 day period to end so that they don't ask me to return the phone when I call them to remove the data plan. Any advice?
