Default A new test to calls using google voice and Fring

So I made the drop down to the 450 minute plan and I have since come up with a way that may or may not let me accumlate some roll over minutes, I have yet to see how the usage shows up on my att account because it's not there yet, but I'll post again what I did.

    Heres what I did:

First, I downloaded the free app Fring from the app store. Secondly, you need to have a google voice number.

Using fring, I dialed my google voice number ### 577 $$$$. Wait for the call to connect. I entered my pin to get into my account, then hit 2 to dial a number. Call routes using my google voice number.

Now, I've only tested this on Wifi so far, and like I said I havent seen how if it shows up on my minute usage, but im thinking since its a fring call, it shouldn't. I'm only using my google voice number because some people have it in their phone, so at least they'll know its me calling because I dont know how a fring call shows up if your not in someones phonebook (if they dont have fring)

Once my usage updates, I'll update this thread and after I test it on 3G using unrestrictor.. If it works, it will be a very cool work around for those looking to save some minutes..

Update: It looks like the calls I made using fring and my google voice number went towards my night and weekend minutes, which would mean that those would go towards my daytime minutes had I made those calls during the day.

So it looks like Fring is out. I got Truphone next, I used to use it.. and VOIP by Icall but Icalls app is messing up and not letting me get past the setup stage, so I'll have to re-install the app.

I'll make some test calls with Truphone and see what happens.

I'm using the GV Mobile app on Cydia to make calls using my Google Voice number, I'm anxious to see how it shows up on my bill.

EDIT: Never mind, just found another thread answering this question.

So far, all of the apps ive used have been charging me minutes. I've tried Vonage, fring, truphone. I thought one of them let you call for free, I'm pretty sure its Icall come to think of it, but the app is messed up on my iphone and wont work right so I can't test it. Does anyone know of a VOIP app that will make calls that wont count towards minutes?

Personally I'm waiting on Google to work up some sort of VOIP solution to use with your Google voice account. If you were lucky enough to grab a Gizmo5 account before Google bought them out, you can use the Gizmo5 service to make FREE calls using your Google voice account and your data connection. Unfortunately, Google has suspended the registrations for Gizmo5 now that they have bought the company, but I imagine it is only a matter of time until they unveil their own solution using these guy's work.

If I get a skype subscription, and use that to make calls... Those calls theoretically shouldnt be charged towards my plan, correct?

i use the Vonage app to make calls through the 3g network using 3g unrestrictor, it's a lot simpler and faster then your process, it just doesn't work good when in a moving vehicle at least in my area (washington dc). great thing is that when i call people it still uses my Caller ID.

yeah, but from what ive seen those calls still count towards your minute plan, which is what im trying to avoid.. I've tried it though.

Thread update: I've gotten a unlimited subscription to skype, for the us and canada (2.95 a month) and have made a few test calls during the day on it, looks like these calls are not going towards my minutes. Just what I was looking for. Now to setup a skype to go number so people can reach on that way and test it out..I'll update this once I get results.
