UK Iphone 3GS Traveling to the USA

Hey guys, Quick question, im going on holiday to America on the 16th of Nov, I own a UK Iphone 3gs, It is jailbroken and unlocked using ultrasn0w,

Basically my question is this, I cannot live without 3G signal when im away, I use the official carrier on pay as you go over here in the UK (O2) and the roaming charges would be a fortune for the USA.

So if i were to get a pay as you go AT&T sim and put it in my iphone would i be able to use their 3G signal at no cost?

You'll need to add a data plan to your PAYG sim.. Last year they were offering unlimited medianet for $20/month; can't find anything other than $20 for 100MB now though :/

IN any case though, yes, you'll be able to use 3g data. Just be sure to set your data apn settings to wap.cingular

So i need to set up a data plan just to use the 3G signal? I will mostly be using a landline to call back to the UK

Also would it be any different if i were to go with another USA carrier such as Tmobile etc?

No, you don't need a data plan... But without one you'll be paying ridiculous per KB data charges. And no, the iPhone can't use t-mobile's 3g network; different frequencies. You're stuck with 2g (edge) and 1g (GPRS) data on t-mobile.

Are you planning on using data? Or do you just want the "3g signal" for voice?
