Busted by ATT for Tethering on Iphone 2g?
I know tethering is against the rules, but has anyone actually got in trouble for doing it? I am wondering because I would like to tether on my 2g iphone once and a while.

I don't know what you mean by "in trouble" but I'm guessing you mean charged extra for using too much data (over 5GB which is AT&T's limit).
I did a lot of research into this because I went to Hawaii for a month and knew I wouldn't have the internet in my house there so I downloaded the mywi app (a tethering app). What I learned from forums about this topic was that AT&T has a limit of 5GB, so you should probably stick to below that and if you do, you wont have any problem, I promise (at least until they officially add tethering packages and charge you $60 a month). However, if you decided to go crazy like I did while in Hawaii, AT&T has a limit, but charges you exactly $0.00 for every mb you go over. So basically the limit is just there to monitor those who go over. If you do go over, they will flag your account and start paying a little better attention to your account. If you continuously go over, supposedly they will ask you to get on one of their higher priced plans (but I have never heard this happen). From what I have read, people go over all the time and don't have problems (One guy even claims he used over 100GB in one month). Personally, I was broadcasting Mywi all month in Hawaii with 4 computers constantly using my iPhones internet and I was still under 5GB (barely 4,865MB) . So, it's pretty hard to do but if you do, nothing happens. If anyone has a personal story of something happening to them (and not something they heard happen), it would be very informative if you shared with us

Yea, that is what I was thinking. I haven't been able to find any stories of anyone actually getting shut off or charged more for tethering so far.

Yeah Ive known a few people to get charge for excessive data usage....they know. So if you tether keep it to a minimum.

Ok this bothers me... My bill says iphone unlimited data plan... How in the he'll can they charge me more if I go over a 5gb limit if I have unlimited data... I don't tether but I use quite a lot of data... Is this not false advertising? Saying I'm on an unlimited data plan but then imposing a limit??

"Fair Use". Don't abuse it or they'll cut you off/charge you through the nose. Almost like Roaming. You can't roam too much or they will cancel you.

Because you signed the contract and agreed to the terms of use that state "unlimited" refers to a plan with a "soft limit," one that is very high and only in place so that people do not exploit the term "unlimited." They have the right to terminate your service whenever they want for whatever reason they want.

THE FINE PRINT. Working for a wireless carrier, yeah the UNLIMITED PLAN has a limit of 5gb. LOL. Its funny how that works, but really, unless your downloading games or movies, or EXCESSIVE use you don't really even hit that number of 5 gb. The big reason why its not TRULY unlimited is due to the fact we are using towers which are also shared by general 1x, GSM, CDMA voice. But when LTE technology hits fullblown, then I think we will see full unlimited plans. If we had fully unlimited plans wireless, i would cancel my home internet service.

^That is exactly what they are trying to prevent...using this data plan as a primary Internet source. It is the same with their laptop cards.

The key here is to be smart about this. I need this hacked feature. So lets stay calm and cool about the usage before they introduce another carrier patch and we lose it again, then wait for another work around. LOL

I've been tethering for over a year averaging around 10GB/month data usage with no issues. This 5GB bs is not true. Last month I used 23GB and they didn't say a word. I honestly have a hard time believing anyone has been charged for tethering than had the APN settings done right.

How are APN settings done right? I tether via BT to my laptop. I have switched back and forth between using iPhone and laptop while surfing. According to my data usage on AT&T; it is not discerning the difference between the laptop and the iPhone. All data appears as "Internet/MEdia Net".
On iPhone I use myWi and Bluetooth Network Connection/BT PAN to tether or simply plug in USB cable. APN settings never came into play when doing this.
Prior to buying an iPhone, I tethered with my Razr V3xx and you could see a difference between using the phone to browse (if you can call it that) and tethering. It displayed some acronym related to dialup when tethering and simply "MEdia Net" when browsing via phone.“The meek may inherit the Earth. The weak will hand it to them.” - ZepRider

I doubt that there is a 5gb limit, but there is a poin in which your account is flagged, and you can potentially be billed per kb $0.05, but this would only be if they could prove that you tethered. Otherwise, you get a huge bill, call and be like WTF? And it gos from there.
And it will be like a taco inside a taco within a Taco Bell that's inside a KFC that's within a mall that's inside your dream! Springboard screwy after reboot? Here is the fix

You guys made me feel a lot better. Today is my first day tethering from my laptop and its scary how easy it was. I just moved and my cable & internet won't be set up until Friday so I decided to go this route in the meantime. I was worried but I'm not going to download anything.

5gb is a lot compared to that one place in Europe. I think they cap out at like 700mb lmao. So you shouldn't be complaining. I'm at 3.5gb of usage right now. I've been using it more and more so I've got to calm down a lil. But the mywi app is so nice to use ^^ but like past posts have been saying.. You have to use it wisely and not be excessive to become noticed.
