Temp. data plan for at&t

I currently have an at&t account and an iPhone that I bought from Hong Kong but am outside the US and don't really my account.

I will be back in the US for a few weeks and am wondering about getting a data plan activated while I'm there but then deactivating it when I leave.

What I am wondering is: has anyone done this when using an iPhone? If so what did you do and what should I expect? Also since another phone is registered on my at&t account what will happen when I start using my iPhone? will they switch me to an iPhone account and then refuse to remove the data plan when I leave the US again?
