Could I just buy an iPhone straight from Apple, then cancel my service after I sign up for it, unlock my iPhone and then use it on T-Mobile like I want to? This would help me avoid paying the ridiculous prices on eBay.
Is this a plausible method of action or are there loopholes to prevent this?

Ya you need to have a ATT number and current plan or activate service with ATT when you buy it. You can try to buy the phone, sign up for new service, cancel the service, and keep the phone.....

Tools Needed:

Pocket knife
Baggy jeans
Friend with a camcorder to film the incident (upload to MMi afterwords)

The Guide

1) Walk into your local Apple Store

2) Proceed to the iPhone Display area
3) Break out your trusty pocket knife and cut the cords on about five iPhones (Alarms will sound, so be quick)

4) Stuff your pockets with the phones and maybe a case or two if you have time

5) As the Apple employees start coming near you start screaming random jibberish

6) Run for the exit. Try to knock over as many people as you can while running out of the store.

7) Run into some nearby woods and hide there for a few days till things blow over. Luckily at this point you will have several iPhones to keep you company.

8) Log on to MMi and tell us about your epic victory at the Apple Store
