Default Is the iPhone 2G capable of 3G speed??

I recently recieved an iPhone 2G from my grandfather. Im with AT&T and have upgraded to OS 3.0, but when ever I go into a 3G area my phone still says im using EDGE. My friend has an AT&T phone and so does my sister. Their phones says they have 3G speed. Is the iPhone 2G capable of 3G?

P.S. neither my sister or my friend have an iPhone

    No its not.

Thats why Apple/ATT came out with the iPhone "3G" and iPhone "3GS"

PS- There are alot of ATT phones that are capable of 3G data speeds.

Seriously!? Out of all the hacks and mods out there, there is no way to pull this off? Is it a hardware issue or just no one has put forth the effort?

Its not that hard. You need to change out the logic board, the digitizer, the lcd, the casing, and a few other components and you should be good. Voila 3G speeds on your 2G!
