Use basic $10 data plan on iphone 2g?

I got an impression, but i have a 2g iphone. I have the $10 att data plan, and was wondering if i could use the iphone it? I put the sim card in the iphone and it didnt work. The network settings tab only shows wifi and unconfigured vpn, but no edge. Please Help!!!
