Just do a restore to the 3.1.2 firmware. Jailbreak with blackra1n (blackweather). Then using the 'blackra1n' app that will appear on your iPhone's homescreen, install 'sn0w'. Now you're good to go. It does update your baseband, but the latest baseband has been unlocked for use on 3.1 or 3.1.2.

It will update your baseband and there is no going back. But blacksn0w works for the new baseband

If I was a newbie that would scare me away from doing this ...

Nothing is wrong with updating your baseband anymore.

Thank you guys for all your help.

How do I get back my Cydia's applications? Specially the ones I paid for?
I'm trying to upgrade or do something mainly because my visual voice mail doesn't work or breaks after a while and tethering also breaks the mms works. Other than this I'm happy with 3.0.1 Of course after a while I'll be way behind. So you guys think this is the best thing to do?

There are apps for that, but I'm guessing you're asking because you did not use one. If you didn't use PkgBackup (arguably the best and easiest) or Appbackup which I think does the same thing, then I think you will need to manually reinstall your apps. Cydia will know that you paid for them.

Buy PkgBackup if you don't have it, install it, run it, sync with iTunes and you're ready for restoring apps next time.

To fix visual voicemail, try going to the ATT website and through one of the support links choose to "reset visual voicemail" or something like that. You will get a text message with a new password and can reset visual voice mail.

I am on 3.1.2 and have mms, tethering (native and MyWi working simultaneously), and fully functional visual voice mail. i hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply, but now I have another problem ... I just restored to a custom 3.1.2 keeping my 4.28 bb but not I don't have a signal. Do you know where I can get a custom 3.1.2 that works with the 4.28 bb?

I think you can google it because custom firmware is not allowed on the site. However, why are you trying to preserve the baseband? With Blacksn0w and Blackra1n, you can upgrade to official 3.1.2 and jailbreak and unlock.

Upgrade everything, start off with a clean 3.1.2, set up as a new iphone, then jailbreak and unlock with Blackra1n and Blacksn0w respectively. At this point, I don't think there is any reason to keep the old baseband.

It may have been useful to keep the old baseband a week ago, but not in light of Blacksn0w.

Ok, if I upgrade to a clean 3.1.2 and then follow Blackra1n & Blacksn0w how do I back up all my applications so I can restore them?

Hey guys I upgraded to 3.1.2. Now gmail's push doesn't work with this release or at least they are having problems with it. Yahoo's push works. Now I need to go back to 3.0.1 so my gmail push works. Any ideas?
