Default For those using AT&T and Swirly MMS

Ok so ive been trying for months to get SwirlyMMS working on my phone, and ive never had it working. I do however know that you have the correct settings when your phone gives you the "Forbidden" error message when trying to send a message.

According to AT&T, it in their contract with Apple that they can not enable WAP PUSH on your line if there is an IMEI associated with an iPhone on it because its against the contract they have with Apple.

In the conversation below, i tried to manipulate the AT&T rep to enable WAP PUSH on my phone so that I could use MMS. I tried to sound a little stupid so they would think im too dumb to know how to jailbreak and use swirly on my phone but it doesnt work, apparently its an AT&T policy now or something to not enable it at all.

How people are managing to get it to work? No clue... I have a family plan with 3 lines, unlimited messaging (which includes text, mms, and all that), unlimited data on my line and 1 of the other lines, and nothing I do works. Ive tried every set of settings ive found the past few months and nothing works. I havent changed my IMEI or swapped out my SIM with any other phone. So if you got it working on yours, then your one lucky s.o.b!

Welcome to AT&T Technical Support Chat. My name is 'Ricky Clay' and I’ll be happy to assist you today.

Ricky Clay: Hello. How may I assist you today?

Mike D: Hello Ricky, i need some help

Ricky Clay: I will be more than happy to assist you.

Mike D: i have an iPhone 3G and it doesnt have MMS, so ive heard you can put the sim in another phone and use it to send MMS instead

Mike D: i have a RAZR to do this with, but i was also told it wont work unless MMS is enabled in snopes or something like that, and wap push is turned on

Mike D: can we do this?

Mike D: i use MMS at work to send pictures of our jobs back to the owner

Ricky Clay: Thank you for your response concerning MMS on your iPhone, Mr. D. I will be more than happy to help you.

    Mike D: ok

Ricky Clay: I do apologize. AT&T does not support WAP push with the iPhone or 3G iPhone. We will not be able to enable this feature in our system. I understand that you may found information in forums or by word of mouth that we can alter our system to allow for this. We are unable to do so. I do apologize. If you need further information in this regard, please contact Apple iPhone Support by calling 800-694-7466. Their hours of operation are 8am to 8pm CT daily.

Mike D: im not sending mms through the iphone, i cant it doesnt have MMS, i need to send MMS messages through my old RAZR phone, but its disabled

Ricky Clay: Thank you for advising.

Mike D: if we can do this (which i pray to god we can!) then i have to switch my sim card to my RAZR when i get to work, and switch it back when im done

Ricky Clay: You are requesting to use one SIM card with both your iPhone and you Razr. Is this correct, Mr. D?

    Mike D: yes

Mike D: i dont have the Razr with me, its at home, do i need it?

Ricky Clay: I apologize for the inconvenience, however; I will not be able to enable WAP push with your line to switch between two phones. I apologize for this inconvenience, Mr. D.

Mike D: why cant you enable it for me? I have to pay for a whole new line if i cant get this going

Mike D: that or ditch the phone i payed $400 for

Ricky Clay: Unfortunately, we are not allowed to activate WAP push for any iPhone customer as the iPhone is not MMS capable. If you are referring to using MMS using an application downloaded from the application store, you will need to contact Apple Support at the number I've listed above. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, Mr. D. May I assist you with anything else today?

Mike D: but its not for my iphone

Mike D: its for my razr

Mike D: i know the iphone isnt mms capable, but the razr IS mms capable, thats what i need it for

Ricky Clay: I understand this is for your Razr, however; you stated you plan to switch the SIM card back and fourth between the two phones. Unfortunately, I cannot enable this for you, Mr. D. I apologize for this inconvenience.

Ricky Clay: For further assistance, you will need to contact Apple Support at the number I've listed for you, Mr. D.

Mike D: is it bad to swap them between the two?

Ricky Clay: Yes, due to the fact that the iPhone does not support MMS, I will not be able to enable the feature within our system. Please contact Apple Support for further assistance, Mr. D.

Ricky Clay: Now that I've directed you to Apple Support for further assistance, may I assist you with anything else today?

Mike D: so if apple support approves it, how will you be informed you to enable the wap thing for me?

Mike D: this really has almost nothing to do with the iphone, i dont know why i have to call apple so i can use MMS on my razr, that doesnt make sense at all

Ricky Clay: I cannot enable WAP push for your Razr, Mr. D. The reason is because you stated you plan to switch the SIM card between both your iPhone and your Razr. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Mike D: that still doesnt make sense. iPhone is not capable of MMS, and thats what the wap push is for.. Enabling wap push does absoluting nothing for the iphone, but lets me mms on my razr

Ricky Clay: I apologize for the inconvenience regarding not being able to enable WAP push on your line, Mr. D. May I assist you with anything else today?

Mike D: so if i just use the razr can i activate it? i wont use my iphone then since it cant mms

Ricky Clay: You must update your IMEI number to reflect the Razr on your account, Mr. D. If an iPhone is associated with your line, unfortunately our system will not allow me to process the requested change.

Mike D: ok then tomorrow when i bring in my razr i'll do the live chat again and update it

Ricky Clay: If you'd like to update your IMEI to reflect your Razr, you should re-contact us when you have the phone available to you. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused today, Mr. D. May I assist you with anything else today?

Mike D: that will be all then

Ricky Clay: I thank you for visiting our technical support live chat today and being a valued and loyal customer. We appreciate your business and would like to get your feedback on your experience today, so please complete the customer survey after clicking the "x" button to exit our chat. It has been a pleasure assisting you and I hope you have a happy holiday season!

I think that even though they turned it on, once you try to connect to send an MMS, the AT&T servers see your on an iPhone and disable it again, but im really not sure.

    illinijeff217:
Cant post a link to it because you have to be logged in to get to the chat. But since AT&T disabled the chat for iPhone users, you have to log into the website and click your tab (if you have a tab) so you can see your phone. Then do this:

    1) Under the picture of your iPhone is a link that says "Not my phone/device?" Click it

    2) Change your phone to something else, it automatically changes back in a few hours to a day or so, i chose Blackberry 8800 and it works.

    3) Once your back on the page where you click that link on step 1, you should see a link on the right that says "Features Support", click it.

    4) Now on the right you will see a new menu item added called "Technical Support Chat", it wasnt there when iPhone was selected, but now it is. Click it and the rest you will be able to figure out on your own.

Here is the transcript from my conversation with AT&T about adding MMS. Enjoy!

Chat InformationPlease wait for a representative to respond.

    Chat start time: 07:46

Chat InformationWelcome to AT&T Data Support Chat. My name is 'Zamfir Thorpe' and I’ll be happy to assist you today.

Zamfir Thorpe: I will be happy to assist you with your LG picture messaging today!

Zamfir Thorpe: How are you doing?

    Stealth Bravo: great

Zamfir Thorpe: Is it okay for me to refer to you as Stealth?

    Stealth Bravo: sure

    Zamfir Thorpe: Thank you Stealth.

Zamfir Thorpe: Just to make sure I understand you are having trouble with picture messaging correct?

Stealth Bravo: Hello and good evening. I need help getting picture messaging working on my LG flip phone. The situation is that I have both a iphone and a LG cu500 phone.

Stealth Bravo: I utilize the iphone 70% of the time but about 30% of the time I am forced to use the LG phone. This is because at my job when I travel to certain government/military bases, they do not allow iphones to used.

Stealth Bravo: This is when I pop the sim card out of the iphone and into the LG. The problem I am having is that my LG will not send picture messages! It is very important that I am able to send photos of job related stuff to my HQ.

    Zamfir Thorpe: Thank you.

Zamfir Thorpe: I am sorry to hear about the trouble you are having with picture messaging.

Zamfir Thorpe: In order to better assist you today, I will need to access your account. Will this be ok Stealth?

    Stealth Bravo: sure

    Zamfir Thorpe: This is a secure channel. Please provide the following information;

1-The wireless phone number you are inquiring about, area code first.
2-The first and last name as listed on the account.
    3-Your full name.
4-The last four digits of the Social Security # or password listed on the account.

Please bear with me while I access your account. Once I have the information it may take me 1-2 minutes to complete this.
    Thank you.

    Stealth Bravo: **********

    Stealth Bravo: Stealth bravo

    Stealth Bravo: Stealth bravo

    Stealth Bravo: ****

    Zamfir Thorpe: Thank you

Zamfir Thorpe: Are you able to access media net on the LG device?

    Stealth Bravo: no

    Zamfir Thorpe: Thank you.

Zamfir Thorpe: What take place with a iphone 3G, is that sim swapping is high not recommend. The provision that allow the iphone 3G to work, does not allow service to work on other device. To be able to send/receive picture messaging (MMS) the device need to be able to access media net. Being that the device does not have MMS feeature and nor access to media net the service would not work correct when the sim is place in another device.

Stealth Bravo: I was speaking with a representative yesterday and was told the problem may be with my iphone data plan.

Stealth Bravo: So I have been researching the problem.

Stealth Bravo: Can medianet be added to plan to work for both phones?

Stealth Bravo: Apparently there are plenty others who have had the same issue and their solution was handled by tech support. I read that it won’t work unless picture messaging (mms) is enabled in snopes and wap push is enabled and turned on.

Stealth Bravo: Now I really have no idea what that means I just copy and pasted off AT&Ts support forum. Well it sounds like an easy enough fix. Can this be done? Thanks!

Zamfir Thorpe: I am sorry but no a line of service can only have one data plan. Also MMS is not is approved to be provisioned for iphone users.

Stealth Bravo: Well I don't want it for the iphone (iphone cant even do mms) I need it for the LG

Stealth Bravo: I use email for photos on my iphone

Zamfir Thorpe: I am sorry I would not be able to change that service for you. Your iphone device is required to have a iphone data plan and no provision MMS for the device.

Stealth Bravo: If it is as simple as clicking enable to make my LG have picture messaging, why wouldn't you do that? I have been spending $3,000.00 a year with your company. A simple click of a button and you are able to satisfy a loyal customer.

Stealth Bravo: This has nothing to do with iphone anyway.

Zamfir Thorpe: I am sorry but I would not be able to input that service for your device in use. Your core device is the iphone 3G device and provision for that device does not allow MMS to be enable. If you would like you can switch your core device to be the LG CU 500 and add the need feature for your device to access MMS and data, but you would not longer be able to use the iphone 3G device Stealth.

Stealth Bravo: You know that is not a viable option

Stealth Bravo: Can you not offer me any type of solution?

    Stealth Bravo: Define provision?

Stealth Bravo: Why block a feature that the iphone doesn't even support?

Stealth Bravo: That doesn't make any sense

Zamfir Thorpe: The service is not block it is just not enable for iphone user is how the system configure iphones user . I am sorry that you feel that way Stealth.

Stealth Bravo: why have some people been able to do it via the method I mentioned?

Zamfir Thorpe: I understand that people have advised about service that allow the feature to work, but this is not approved by AT&T and would not be a service provision for iphone user.

Stealth Bravo: Its on your support website. Why would people make that stuff up?

Zamfir Thorpe: I am sorry would not be able to advised you for that. I would not be able to enable this service as it stands currently Iphone user will not be provision for MMS service Stealth.

Stealth Bravo: Can i be transferred to someone interested in maintaining customer satisfaction? My company and I spend thousands of dollars year with AT&T. I simply don't understand. I bend over backwards to help my customers

Zamfir Thorpe: I would not be able transfer to another person. Iphone user currently will not be provision MMS service.

Stealth Bravo: "Iphone user currently will not be provision MMS service." You have copy and paste that several times. Obviously I am dissatisfied with that answer. You don't have to do it the way I asked. I am just looking for some solution.

Stealth Bravo: In my business, I could not simply wash my hands of a customers complaints.

Zamfir Thorpe: I am sorry feel that way Stealth. What is need for a device to be able to send/receive MMS does for go beyond being an iphone user. The device has be able to access media net the device, and then have provision for be able to send/receive MMS. The information that was provide is only a small part of what allow a device to send/receive MMS. The first error that is prevent the device from being able to send/receive MMS is have the correct provision to access media net which and iphone data plan does not give.

Stealth Bravo: And only one data plan can be added to my line?

Stealth Bravo: what happens if you try to add both?

Stealth Bravo: You can't force it?

Zamfir Thorpe: The attempt to add the option data plan would failed. You would not be able to force the system to prevent that.

Stealth Bravo: what is medianet? a network or website?

Zamfir Thorpe: Media net a website that is core to data network for AT&T customer.

Stealth Bravo: what blocks iphones internet from accessing medianet? isn't medianet a cheap service that is given to all phones?

Zamfir Thorpe: When the iphone was design it would not design to use media net.

Stealth Bravo: i understand that the iphone was not, but my LG was designed for medianet. this isnt a problem on the iphone end but on the iphone data streams end?

Zamfir Thorpe: The system does not provision service for media net, as long the iphone device is in use the system will not enable service for media net.

Stealth Bravo: what is wap pushing? is that what would allow the iphone data stream to connect to medianet?

Zamfir Thorpe: The iphone can not connect to media net. The wap push is design to push information and service for control via the WAP network. Wap push do effect iphone data streaming.

Stealth Bravo: what is the wap network?

Zamfir Thorpe: The WAP network is a wireless access protocol that allow the device to send and receive information from different server to connect to data.

Stealth Bravo: So are saying there is no way to make it happen?

Zamfir Thorpe: I sorry but I have advised the options that you can take at point. I understand that you do not wish to take this options.

Stealth Bravo: I can send you 5 urls of sites that advised me that mms can be enabled on a iphone plan. they all say that some reps will do it and some won't. Which one did i get?

Stealth Bravo: If you wont do it then fine, i will move on. but that is different then it not being physically possible.

Stealth Bravo: You have been informative

Zamfir Thorpe: I am sorry in this channel I would not be able to enable MMS for iphone Stealth.

Zamfir Thorpe: I have advised about provision for MMS with and iphone device.

Zamfir Thorpe: Is there anything else that I can do for you tonight Stealth?

Stealth Bravo: you haven't done anything for me tonight unfortunately. but i am sure you want to end the chat with your hands washed.

Stealth Bravo: Who can i speak with to describe my frustrations?

    Stealth Bravo: High ups?

    Stealth Bravo: Bosses?

    Stealth Bravo: Authority Figures?

    Stealth Bravo: Anyone?

Zamfir Thorpe: I am sorry but I would not be able to transfer you. There is a customer survey at the end of the chat what you can express your feeling for this chat session.

Stealth Bravo: Well when the chat ends I will go ahead with that. Can you explain to me in detail what a provision is? And who makes the provisions?

Stealth Bravo: nevermind just let me take the survey.

Zamfir Thorpe: The provision is handheld by the network and provision department that right the code to allow feature and service to work based on device type. Based the device option for what service are enable with the service are enable and allow with the need plan for the device.

Zamfir Thorpe: Is there anything else that I can do for you tonight Stealth?

Stealth Bravo: yes, but forget it

Zamfir Thorpe: What else can I do for you Stealth?

    Stealth Bravo: nothing obviously

    Stealth Bravo: bye

Zamfir Thorpe: Have a good night Stealth!!

    Stealth Bravo: 3<==3 yourself

Zamfir Thorpe: We realize that you have a choice in Wireless providers and Thank you for giving us the opportunity to assist you today. We appreciate your business and thank you for visiting the AT&T Live Support Chat.

611!!! Dont bother with the online chat. They are useless. Low level tech support at best. You have to talk to a rep on the phone...but even that may not work.

yeah thats what i did. Although I did call them when i had my sim plugged into my treo. Not sure if this make a difference. They can detect the IMEI on their end, so you might try swapping the sim to your LG when you call. If my MMS is working tomorrow I will let you know.

    oh F AT&T and F Jackie!

Smile Solution for those who still can't get MMS even with SIM swap...

I was one of those users that couldn't get swirlyMMS to work on AT&T for the life of me. Tried the SIM swap / Medianet solutions which only worked for like 30 minutes! After a while I couldn't even get my dumbphone to connect to Medianet or use MMS to make another attempt at aforementioned method. I thought all was lost.

It had been like 12 hours since my latest SIM swap attempt and I have no idea why I tried this, but I went into settings to verify that I had the fetch new data setting set to "push." I did. I noticed that the "fetch" option below the push slider was set to "manual." For shits and giggles I set it to "hourly" and exited settings.

I fired up Swirly, and sent my brother a pic, expecting the ".403 forbiden" error yet again, but no! he got the MMS! I tried a few times with my other (Verizon) phone back and forth and it kept on working! Swirly has been working ever since!

So everyone out there who is about to give up and wait until 3.0 is released please try this! Ensure fetch is not set to manual and your problems should go away!!! I'm celebrating my long overdue MMS success!!! Hope this helps people out there!!

Default For those who are having issues recieving MMS...

Having only recently gotten Swirly running on AT&T I am still troubleshooting some issues. Came accross another fix by dumb luck.

I noticed some MMS attempts from other carriers failed. A Verizon phone returned an "undeliverable address" error, particularly when using a mixed message (PIX + text or PIX + sound). Using the international format (+1xxx-xxx-xxxx) in the address window cleared up some of these issues.

This got me to thinking. So, I went into my iPhone's settings and turned "international assst" off. Fired up the Verizon phone and was sending mixed messages without any problems and without needing and international format number. So make sure your international assist is turned off, and more issues should just go away for you

Now if I could only get a .3g2 video to display on my iphone...

i think you will be good from now on. They may sweep your account but you never know when that may go down. The longest I went was 4 weeks but I was tweaking with carrier settings and I think I flagged my account. Called back and it has been running for a couple weeks now.

Would you recommend upgrading to 3.0 instead using swirly? Just trying to get some input. Thanks in advance

    Default 3.0 vs. swirly

I guess it depends on what you want. If you're like me and use yellowsn0w or some other unlock and want to continue to do so then the answer is don't even think about messing with 3.0 If you want to jailbreak using the official devteam software then the answer is still avoid 3.0.

There are inherent risks and pitfalls associated with using beta firmware, which are of course compounded by using jailbreaks as well as wanting to unlock the device. I myself don't want anything bad to happen to my sacred iPhone so I'm satisfied with Swirly for a month or two.
