hi guys, i'm thinking about buying a used 3g off someone and then unlocking/jailbreaking it. i'm actually with att right now, but i just want the iphone without having to pay for the data package (360 bucks extra/year = no thanks) and i would basically use the phone as an unlocked phone. HOwever, i've heard rumors of how att can detect wehther or not you're running an iphone on their network using the IMEI data and will automatically add the plan to your contract.

If i'm able to succesfully jailbreak/unlock the iphone using the yellowsn0w cydia app, will att still be able to add a data package to my contract? i have no need for 3g or edge, i simply want the phone since it combines an ipod/phone together in a sexy package and my university has enough wifi spots to keep me covered. This is pretty much the only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger..i do not want to pay for the data package.

Also, does any one have an iphone 2g unlocked tahts running att? are you guys paying for the data package too....

im running 2.2 on a 2g phone unlocked,
the only way they can tell is if you go into the store, tell them its unlocked, then tell them your credit card details/att details so they can charge you

I have 3G white sevice with T-Mobile and my cousin have Motorola Razer with AT&T ( she just recently add line with my uncle plan for $9.99, I think)
So, she ask me if i can sell iPhone for her. I did and gave it for her on Wed. Everything were fine until Thur. night( Christmas day), she call me and said AT&T sent my uncle(primary account holder) a message saying in order for her to use the iPhone, she has to pay $70 extra on top of the service fee per. month.(included the internet service)

I didn't have time to go online and verify that info. but so far that's what my cousin tell me.

So now she have to return the phone back for me.

I have a 2g jb and unlocked and at&t could tell I had an iphone and they sent a message telling me to call to add a data plan. I pay $20.00 dollars a month for unlimited data and 200 text messages. I do not live in an area with 3g or edge so I am paying for nothing other than 200 text messages but it is worth it to have the iphone. Good luck

They can read your IMEI and when they do, they will tell you to upgrade or else. What you need to do is change your IMEI with one from a old phone, like a Razor and then you can get the cheap 9.99 plan. They will read the new IMEI and think you are using a Razor.

They can tell you are using an iPhone. You can add any data plan to the phone and that should stop them from hassling you. Shop all of the data plans and specials. then pick the cheapest (which I think will turn out to be the iphone plan).

I have my 2G unlocked/jailbroken for several months now
And I enjoy it even without data plan
It will show on your account that you're using an iPhone
But just go for it, they can't force you to buy a proper data plan.

You can port you number over to prepaid. I use AT&T Prepaid Pick Your PLan with no data plan and everything works fine. You can choose the plan that works best for you. My plan is way cheaper than it would be if I had signed a contract.

how does one change the imei on teh iphone? i would love to replace the imei of my iphone with the imei of my old sony ericsson phone that i won't be using anymore...

i think its really retarded that att would force you to get a data package if you're not using it at all

^They won't force you to, but if you decline and accidentally use EDGE, you're going to get hit hard if you don't have a plan.

As for changing the IMEI, it can only be done on 1.1.4 an previous versions via ZiPhone.
