Consequences of using iPhone 3g with iPhone 2g plan
I switched my at&t iphone data plan from the 3g to the iphone 2g the other day but I continue to use my iPhone 3g. I then got an email and text stating that my data plan was ineligible for the iPhone 3g and that I need to contact AT&T so that I do not incur charges and such.
Am I in trouble? Will I get a fine, a huge bill, get black listed, anything?
Has anyone done this? What are the consequences?

You wont be able to . Just on a whim, teh other day i popped my son's 2G sim into my 3G to see if I could swap sims. I then swapped the sims back to their rightful phones. I received an email from ATT within hours notifying me that I needed to call customer service to set up a 3G plan for that phone number (my son's). Since I put his sim back into his 2G I just ignored the message. I also checked my account online and confirmed that they did not change the plan.
My guess is they would either nag you to death or just start billing you for a 3G plan.

I was on the 2g plan with the 3g phone for about a month after launch. At that point my data stopped working entirely. They flagged my account so I couldn't use any more data without calling them and getting switched to the proper plan.

I have been lucky with the one old 2G that my husband inherited from me. He likes the large touch screen dialer and full keypad for SMS on the rare occasion he texts as well as the easy interface for his contacts. He does not use any other feature of the iPhone. He somehow prefers to use a separate iPod for music/video and has a Blackberry from his employer for his e-mail. At anyrate, I had unlocked the iPhone and we still have it running on 1.1.4 since its stable as a phone. Hes taken it on several overseas business trips and it works just fine. I toggled it to turn off data roaming and we have yet to be charged for a single kb of data. ATT apparently knows he has an iPhone because when i check the account online, despite my changing his profile to show he has a V3 (his old phone), it keeps defaulting back to iPhone. It has not yet nagged for a data plan as I havent done a resync on it, nor has he opened up any apps that use data.
I know, what a waste of an iPhone, but the easily readable keys are nice for him, and he thinks it "looks cool" with its custom skin. But with 5 phones on the plan including 2 3G iPhones and one other 2G on a legit data plan plus the extra $30 for unlimited texting (son away at college) my ATT bill is over $200/month as it is. High bill was $362 before we got the unlimited texting! "Someone" had to reimburse me for that.

I just put my Pay As You Go GoPhone sim from my 2G in a 3G to confirm that it was true for myself and it worked. I used data, made calls and accessed my voicmail. The people at ATT prepaid all told me the 3G would not work. I don't understand why they would be saying that.
I would have my URL here so you could hear our music but apparently that's sig spam. WTF?

I heard that if you unlock and jailbreak, they won't be able to detect it. I unlock my iphone and use my blackberry sim in it without any problems.

You can use the media net unlimited on the 2g. Just have to find a sales rep that will take your iphone data plan off and add the media net.
