The AT&T guy said if I cancel the $30 data plan AT&T would audit my account within 3 days and charge me $20 to put the data plan back on.
I do not need the data plan at the moment, so I was thinking I would swap my SIM to another phone and call in to cancel the data plan. Is this possible? Will they really audit? I figured the guy was just lying.
switching your sim would work. you wont have to pay data for the iphone if your not using the iphone. you will get a text message if you stay on the iphone and dont sign up for the data plan. it is manadatory to have the data plan witht the iphone. lots of people have been getting texts telling them to get the data plan to avoid charges. hope this helps.
if you need a cheap route on getting a diff phone, buy a cheap gophone from wal mart and put our sim in that.
I would like to use the iphone without data plan, but I suppose AT&T would find out somehow? Thanks for the reply, I will just use my temporary RAZR until I can afford the data plan again.
My wife and I both have the iPhone 3G. Due to certain life circumstances we had to cut some costs for a while so we canceled the data plan on her phone. I just told the rep at the store I needed it off on her phone and went in and did it. Rebooted her phone and it was gone. They told me I could turn it off and on as needed. This was 3 months ago and ATT still hasnt tried to force it back on.
I think this were I am supposed to say something about the Thanks button so my epeen doesnt shrivel up and fall off and then I kill myself.
I called AT&T and they wanted my IMEI # for my new phone to take off the data plan and said the iphone wont work without a data plan. I am assuming I can't put the SIM card back into the iphone without alerting AT&T? 8*(
you can have the phone without a data plan, and it does work without one, you just won't be getting online... tell the rep that you won't be using the data plan and if they can remove it.
I've found I have better luck dealing with a rep face to face if thats an option for you. We have an AT&T store here in town but that sometimes is hit or miss depending on the rep working that day. When I cancelled my wifes data plan I actually hit the kiosk in the mall. Sometimes those smaller places like that you can smoosh(sp?) more. But honestly they shouldnt give you hassle. I know the agreement says you'll have it and they have the right to add it on but I've never run into anyone thats had trouble canceling it or it getting added back on.
I called and asked them to take it off. They said iphone won't work without the plan, so I told them I will use a different phone then. I gave them IMEI# for a spare phone I had and then she took off the data plan. I also had them block internet connection to the line.
I put the SIM back in my iphone and it still works (except for data). I hope they don't "audit" my account and add it back on automatically since my IMEI# is now a different phone.
Anyway, thanks for all the help. I will repost here if they do indeed add it back on!
