Default Did you carrier update with 2.2?

I noticed on the about screen that my carrier is now AT&T 2.9, and the last I checked (I was still on 2.1) it was 2.6. Is this just a coincidence that my local tower is being updated or is everyones the same. I do not get 3G where I live and probably wont for a while (I live in a small city), and keep forgetting to check when I do have 3G (when I go to a much larger city 40 miles away) if the carrier changes. It has said 2.6 since 2.0 but as of yesterday it is 2.9.

PS I do recieve the occasional 3G around town, so if it is just mine that changed I know why

I noticed this as well, I live about 25-30 miles outside 3G and before the 2.2 update mine still read AT&T 2.6 but now I'm on 2.9. I was hoping this had meant 3G was coming since AT&T is pretty rapidly expanding 3G in my area (St. Louis) and it moved south about 50 miles since 3 months ago and I thought it might be finally my turn. But I guess not if everyone is seeing this number change.

My carrier changed as well. No 3G for about 10 miles from my home. Unfortunately for you i don't think it has anything to do with tower upgrades.

Can anyone explain what this means? Is the 2.2 firmware using new ATT backbone software that is used on their network and widespread between any ATT phone?

Is this enabled when the baseband update in 2.2 that allows us to access this new version?

My carrier name changed also with the 2.2 update. It says 2.9. I have full 3g signal at my house, so i dont think it has anything to do with whether you get 3g or not, but i may be wrong....

IMO the signal bars mean nothing. It seems since 2.1 the phone will always show almost a full signal until you try to use it and then it shows the "updated" signal you actual get. Lol.

lol you know what, now that you mention it, i thinks thats true, i just made a phone call and put it on speaker and when i looked at my signal my bars dropped. And here i though At&t did something good for us...

    snky att

It does make a difference. I usually make calls and go from a 3G to EDGE network and on the border, it would hold on to a barley usable 3G network instead of switch to a full EDGE and sometimes even drop on the transition. Since the 2.1 update, this has been a lot better and coming out of a NYC subway with no service into service seemed to pick up the signal faster.

The update did not expand the 3G coverage in anyway unless ATT actually upgraded your area. Its like a WiFi card driver causing your router to send a better WiFi signal. Haha.
