Legally unlocked iphone 3G to work on AT&T network
Hey guys,
I used to have an iphone 3G that I bought from AT&T. I sold the iphone and canceled my contract. However, I have another AT&T line that runs on a motorolla cellphone. I am planning on buying a legally unlocked iphone 3G from Australia and use it here in the U.S. since I am an international student and will eventually go back to Australia. So, my question is:
Can I use the legally unlocked iphone 3G bought from Australia on AT&T network without forcing me to sign an iphone contract ($30 unlimited internet and a 2-year commitment)? Also, if they don't force me, can I add an unlimited medianet which costs $15 a month and use my iphone on 3G network? Would they be able to discover that I am using an iphone (by the IME #) and force me to their iphone plan
?
Thanks
Zain

There are ways around it. For example, if you were to get a 3G capable phone from AT&T, and then swap the SIMs with the one in iPhone 3G, and also 'swap' (if you know what I mean) the IMEI numbers, then AT&T would think that you still have that 3G capable phone, not the iPhone. I don't know if one can change the IMEI on iPhone 3G yet or not, but that would be one way. I just wouldn't mention anything about an iPhone 3G to AT&T, so they don't suspect anything.
And it will be like a taco inside a taco within a Taco Bell that's inside a KFC that's within a mall that's inside your dream! Springboard screwy after reboot? Here is the fix

I just came back to the states from Italy and I have an unlocked 3g. I put my att sim in my phone yesterday, went through the online activation on the AT&T site. I'm using the prepaid plan with unlimited medianet. Medianet was $20 a month though. Everything is working without any problems.

best plan would be to just call them and ask, after all: they don't own your soul yet.
