E icon at the top of the screen

I have a 1st gen 4GB iPhone running firmware 2.0.2

So I have a family plan right now $69.99 plus $10 for each additional line.
I also have the Unlimited Text for $30 a month. I just got an iPhone and
used Winpwn 2.5 to unlock and activate it since I didn't want to activate it
through iTunes. Well there's an E at the top and I looked at the AT&T
website and it said " Letter 'E' icon = Connected to AT&T’s wireless data network.
" I don't have internet or anything like that on my plan. And
the E icon only goes away with the WiFi on. This morning I tried to use
the internet and it worked. I had all the network settings off (Wifi, data
roaming, etc) Will I get charged for using the internet? And how do I turn
off all internet access and get rid of the E icon at the top of the screen?
I just want to use the iPhone for text and calls. Thanks

You can turn off EDGE through tools such as BossPrefs, however the 'E' will always be there. Just because you don't have an internet plan, doesn't mean you're without internet. You'd likely be charged on a per Kb basis. You can call AT&T to block internet usage.

Well I want to just disable the internet so I won't get charged. Is there a way to do it without calling at&t?
